Re: Cruising Options: Connecticut vs Long Island

FYI if you are transiting/ sailing NYC be mindful of the ferries the SI ones do not move off their routes do not play chicken.
Also and this can be big, ….be conservative with your sail plan. If you are close enough to the hirise buildings you can experience dramatic increase in wind speeds by the wind deflection capabilities of these buildings. 15-20 knots can give you 30-35 knot gusts from 15-30° off apparent wind direction
I make the trip once a year.

Mt Sinai harbor is 3 miles east of Port Jefferson,
unlike PJ there are not many services there other than 2 marinas and the
Mt. Sinai YC. Club nice with good restaurant.
Not near town.
Cedar beach on sound is nice.
After entering inlet there is a 90 degree turn to the east with shoal on the east side of channel. Ralphs Fishing station/Marina is right there and has transient moorings.
(pretty good current running as right off inlet)
Moorings also available at Mt Sinai YC and Old Man Boat yard (think new name now).
Many moorings. Good depth in harbor but not a lot of room to anchor. I used to anchor with less scope than than ideal and I have heard that they do not allow anchoring now??? but not sure.
