We currently have nothing more than a VHF and need capability for long-range communication. Are there alternatives to SSB or sat-phone? What do people like?

Once you leave coastal waters and are beyond the range of cellphone and WiFi, satphone and SSB (ham and/or marine) are your only serious options. Do some forum searching for discussions covering SSB and satphone options for voice and email. We're happy to discuss this, but there is already a lot of collected wisdom here in the forum archives.

Anybody else have an alternative for at-sea communications? I sure can't think of any...
