Choosing a Present (What Do i Need for MaxSea to Run ?)

I'm not a sailor myself, but there is one having a birthday soon and I intended to get him something posh related to sailing like a navigation system. Through Youtube I found this MaxSea software which supposedly also does portray the weather, the wind direction etc. Now, a common gps mouse couldn't possibly provide the information needed so:
1.are there some other pieces of hardware that cutting edge navigation systems need to run properly?
2.what other presents could you get for someone who is into photography and sailing but not into technology yet?

thanks in advance, Daniel.
