Charts for the SVI

my wife and I will be sailing form the BVIs to the SVIs during a three week
charter later this month and I need to order some charts. I have decent charts to get me to the western edge of St. Thomas but need to suggestions of approach and harbor charts for Culebra as well as any other you think would be helpful.

Thanks

Fred

I can't recall the chart I used. (which I bought in Road Harbour), but I know I used Stephen J. Pavlidis' guidebook.

I remember the chart I used wasn't real detailed, so I relied heavily on the electronic charting and guidebook for detailed navigation.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful regarding a specific chart. I'm sure someone will have a more specific recommendation for you.

Enjoy the cruise. I really loved getting over there.

Pavlidis' Puerto Rico guide book covers the SVI's.

Chart coverage is by both Imray Iolaire and NOAA. I have the Maptech chartbook for Puerto Rico and the Virgins (Region 10) and it has the NOAA SVI charts, with pretty good harbor charts. I may have extra copies of both the Maptech chartkit and the Pavlidis book, so if you are interested let me know and I will check.

The SVI are U.S. In U.S. waters, NOAA charts rule, IMHO.

I've sailed there many times over the years using standard NOAA charts, and found them to be accurate and all you need.

I also use the Maptech Region 10 and my GPS is basically the NOAA charts. I also use a Large scale Map of Culebra obtained in Road Town Tortola and I also found that having Pavlidus's Cruising Guide to Puerto Rico and the Spanish Virgin Islands to be very informative particularly if your going during the times when Northern swells may occur. The abrupt and non uniform bottom changes as you near Culebra from St. Thomas can make a moderate sea state turn into a raging washing machine with out warning and very little visual indication it is about to occur. A very nice run from St. Thomas turned into a real ride for half an hour as I reached the outer reefs and I was glad I had prepared for such an event.

If you have computer/PC navigation the NOAA charts are FREE. They can be downloaded from the internet. RNC Downloads

OK, I do have an extra copy of the Pavlidis book which you can have for what I paid: $14 plus shipping. But I have not yet located the extra Maptech chartkit.

If you can't take advantage of the free NOAA charts per the prior post, let me know and I'll keep looking for the Maptech chartkit.

Do you know if I can print these off? I have a large format printer (plotter) that will plot/print 42" wide x however long I want.

If you want to print them, try the booklet charts. They are downloadable in PDF format and are intended to be printed at home. Most of the SVI are included in the US Virgin Island charts with the exception of the extreme east end. Here is the link to the VI chartbook.

The pdf format would be a lot easier as you can select with Adobe reader - Fit to paper size.
- - A lot of navigation programs have the option to print out the portion of the chart that is displayed on your screen. This allows you to select a small area, zoom in and print what is on the screen. I do that and print each section I am interested in on ordinary 8.5 x 11 paper with an inkjet printer. When I am finished using them I just throw them in the trash. I can print new ones anytime.
