Chartplotter recommendation

I am new to sailing and I am in need of a new chartplotter and looking for recommendations. I have a 34' Contest monohull. It currently has older Raymarine electronics on her now. I want to install a new chartplotter (don't need fishfinder) and need recommendation. I would like to be NMEA compatible so when I add things in the future and can network them.
Size? Touch Screen vs buttons? Features?
Thanks in advance for your help. I have already found the boating community to be very helpful.

Re: Chartplotter recommendation

Hi Lee,

Hard to beat the latest user-friendly Garmin models. They come in a variety of sizes up to (I think) 14" or bigger, are touch screen, expandable, etc. We have the previous generation, a 7612 xsv, and we really like it.

Re: Chartplotter recommendation

Get the one that you like best. If your old stuff is SeaTalk-1, you can void expense, by staying Ray and up convert the old stuff to ST-NG.

Having delivered boats with all three brands, they all have good features. The Ray and Garmin have easier to learn menus- but I really like B&G- problem is by the time I learn the menus, the delivery is done.

Avoid 100% touch screens like the plague. If you get a device with knobs and touch, that kinda works. Those models let you lock the touch screen so if touched it does not change anything.

What's your budget? If it's limited, consider a refurbished tablet and OpenCPN. Download charts from NOAA etc. Toal investment about $120.
