Chart app

Does anyone know if there is a navigation chart app similar to MapMe on land? What I would like would be something that would let me download needed NOAA nav charts to my iPad and then seamlessly scan a course without having to depend on Internet availability, and without having to locate the next chart and then download that one.
I compare it to MapMe because it’s what I am familiar with. It allows you to anticipate your route and download map areas in advance of travel while you have net availability. Once downloaded, your device GPS keeps you located.

Navionics. Very good. Reasonable price. Need to make sure your iPad is cellular; has gps built in.

Re: Chart app

I use iNavX on an iPad and iPhone. Since you are in the US, you will have access to all or at least most NOAA nautical charts for free. The app is reasonably priced and generally works well.

I use Fugawi, OpenCPN, and C-Map's charting program on a laptop. These apps are generally more complicated but much more powerful with a magnitude of order or so of additional capabilities. The laptop stays down below but the iPad is in the cockpit at the helm.

I also use a Furuno chartplotter with C-Map charts at the helm with a repeater down below.

So, much depends on where you want to access charts, how you intend to use them (route planning, navigation etc) and how much money you have available.

If you scan this site, you will find lots of opinions on alternatives.

Re: Chart app

I’ve had Navionics on my Furuno radar/plotter for a number of years and reasonably familiar with its look/feel. I have now downloaded the Navionics iPad trial app, but can’t find anything on the subscription. I assume its annual. At expiration of subscription, does it go dark or just doesn’t get updated?
