Celestial Navigation App for Android

I see a handful of Celestial Navigation apps for android on Play Store, one of them is aptly named Celestial Navigator and costs only $2.49 (USD). Has anyone used this app? Does it work off-shore with no mobile service? Is it easy to use? Is it accurate? Looking for a backup if GPS goes down, and wonder if this might be viable.

Re: Celestial Navigation App for Android

I looked at several. The two that I've kept are: Celestial Navigator and ezSights. There's also ezAlmanac if you want all the reference manuals for manual site reductions.

Celestial Navigator is derived from an ancient DOS PC application and has very thorough supporting website. ezSights and ezAlmanac are nicely done and easy to use.

I dust off the sextant every year or so. Usually find ourselves too busy onboard to take on site reductions. (We must have a dozen gps's onboard; phones, tablets, vhf, PCs, chartplotter, handhelds...), though.

Navigational Algorithms

A full suite of accurate and very powerful navigational tools. And I believe they are all free. (I have all of them installed, so Google doesn't show me.) I highly recommend them. [Full disclosure: I am acquainted with the author through NavList - but am in no way affiliated with him or his apps.]

Personally, my go-to for quick almanac data is Celestial by Navimatics. IIRC, it costs around US$10, but I think it's worth it.

*** I was going to post a link to Celestial, but it seems to have disappeared from the Play store. (!?) ***
