Yes, I will send you also the info for the mid-May celestial nav class with the SSS once I have it worked out.

So glad you called List Marine! You'll really get a lot out of it. For anyone else, I just saw this diesel class in SoCal: https://occsailing.augusoft.net/inde..._class_id=5923

Re: Celestial Navigation & diesil engine courses

Funny. I'm seeing these classes all over the SF Bay area right now...this is going to be on April 9 at the boat show in Richmond. I'd go just to hear Calder speak, but the List Marine course is more than likely much more hands on with a real engine to play with and Hans uses the same book.

Re: Celestial Navigation & diesil engine courses

When I took the List Marine class the instructor asked each of us what engine we had. They used a Yanmar for the hands-on engine but the instructor was careful to tell me how my Perkins 4.236 was different. The only significant difference was the need to bleed cylinders 3 and 4 at the injectors. Saved my butt in Monterey when I forgot to close the fuel petcock when changing fuel filters.

(I now have a set of five combination wrenches on a caribiner with a paracord lanyard dedicated to bleeding the fuel system 8^) Paracord lanyard keeps wrenches out of the bilge.

Re: Celestial Navigation & diesil engine courses

I ended up taking the List Diesil course today. What a great course and Hans the owener is a wonderful. I'll be talking to them when its time do any serious diesil work or have the motor oil diganosed when it comes time to get the next boat.

Re: Celestial Navigation & diesil engine courses

Get in touch with me if you're interested in attending this and I can provide further details:

Celestial Navigation - A Brief Primer with a focus on Noon Sights

Have you ever wondered how navigation was done before GPS? Singlehanded Sailing Society's Steve Hodges (winner on corrected time of the 2014 Singlehanded TransPac and also won the Celestial Navigation trophy in the 2012 SHTP) will be teaching an introductory seminar on the art of celestial navigation, with a focus on noon sights. The first day on Tuesday May 16 (1800-2100) will be held at Island Yacht Club in Alameda (California), and will include a brief description of the notions involved, such as geometry, position plotting and an introduction to the nautical almanac.

The specifics of how to obtain latitude and longitude from a noon sight of the sun will be presented on Thursday May 18 (1130-1300), with the location in Alameda to be determined, but it probably will be near Ballena Bay Yacht Club.

There will be an opportunity to handle and operate sextants in the meeting room on Tuesday, and then, sky permitting, we will “shoot the sun” on Thursday. Below is the outline of the seminar.

Presentation Outline

• Overview
– Sight Methods
– Plotting Standards
• Theory
– Geometry & Time
– Noon Sight Reduction
Equipment
– Noon Sight
– General Sights
– Nice to haves
• Hands-on Practice
• Resources

Re: Celestial Navigation & diesil engine courses

Last update for the SSS Celestial Navigation class this Tuesday evening, (16 May).

Please take a look at the Sun data in a Nautical Almanac. You can buy the book, or download for free from this site:

https://www.thenauticalalmanac.com/

We will then plan a noon sight for Thursday, 18 May. For that activity you will only need the Sun data for 18 May, and the 'Increments and Corrections' pages (two pages available from the same site). That’s a total of three sheets of paper.
