Re: Celestial Nav. Problems for Fun

Here's a new and simple problem;

What is the Geographical position of the Sun based on the following date and time?

Date 1/20/2015

Time UTC- 07:53:16

Here's the answer;

The GP is;

E 165d 23.9'
S 20d 10.2'

Which corresponds to a GHA of 295d 36.1' and the Declination based on UTC 7 hours.

To find the Sun's GP Longitude based on GHA;

When GHA is greater than 180d subtract the Sun's GHA from 360d.

When GHA is less than 180d then the Sun's GHA equals the Sun's GP Longitude.

The Geographical Position of a celestial body (in the case the Sun) is the point on Earth that the celestial body is directly beneath. That is, if you were at the GP (Latitude and Longitude coordinates) mentioned above the Sun would be directly over your head.
