Re: Catalina island Santa Ana’s in January

OKAY, actually around here back in the 40s, they were called "Santy Anas"
BTW, the best sailing to Catalina is right after a "s-word" event, when the wind is on shore but the swell hasn't built up yet.

Re: Catalina island Santa Ana’s in January

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if this weekend shapes up to be spectacular weather for that visit. I wouldn't BET on it, but I wouldn't be surprised... that's how forecasting has been going recently...

Re: Catalina island Santa Ana’s in January

fwiw, last weekend we headed to catalina with a marine forecast of santa anas, 15-25 gusts to 30.

the day was actually very light, winds around 5-7 knots. until we got close to pv, where we encountered a 30kt sustained gust that partially knocked us down, had to alter course and reduce sails immediately. the high winds persisted for about 5 minutes then dissipated (or we sailed out of them).

we were also at catalina for thanksgiving last year... had to go to cat harbor, were we encountered 45 knot sustained santa anas all night on wednesday.

santa anas can be exciting.
