As a point of reference, this is the
sextant navigation system that was used in lifeboats during WWII:

The kit included a multi-year, condensed almanac, and was geared for noon sights (because they're usually the easiest). Note the simple filter selection (2 ea index and horizon).
It looks like the low-end Davis but is much better built (I have both), and, after getting used to the vernier scale, it works well, especially for sun shots. I've taken dozens of sun sights with it, and no eye problems so far!
