California to the panama

I am currently planning a voyage from Los Angeles to the Panama Canal for January 2015 with a few of my buddies. We all have some experience but are still in need of guidance. I know we need at least a 30 footer but if anyone that has ever accomplished this trip could shed some insight as in, what is the expected time frame, what guides to buy, where to stop along the Mexico coast and planning for the unexpected. Your wisdom will be greatly appreciated😊

For the Central America, past Mexico, the Sarana guides are the most up-to-date. They are downloads at svsaranra.com
People spend years in Pacific Mexico, so your time frame depends on your schedule. Most wait to go to Mex till after hurricane season (Nov). Take a look at the info on the Baja Haha (magazine Latitide 38). They have some good first timers right-ups.

If it interests you, you can almost do the whole trip in day sails. There might be a couple of overnight passages but not many.
If you don't have a refer, there is plenty of ice until you get down to around Nicaragua, El Salvador then it's warm beer.
