BS = SOG makes problems

My Airmar triducer is broken and I'm waiting for the replacement. The issue is the boat speed (BS) reads zero. The B&G Trident has the option to use SOG as BS. Sounds good, right?

No. On the Trident and Zeus3 SOG will show up as BS. However, when calculating TWA from AWA the system uses BS which is zero. Hence, TWA = AWA. Could be other confusion from this oversight.

Seems obvious to me if the operator chooses SOG as BS, then make BS equal to SOG in calculations. Maybe I'm missing something and there is a way to make this happen.

Yes, you are missing something.

The B&G Zeus 3 will calculate ground wind (the real true wind ) without any input from STW.

It wasn't in this case. On Saturday I was racing on the Chesapeake Bay with winds from the north from 8 to 17 kts. Boat speed (SOG) from 5 to 7 kts. The entire time TWA=AWA.

That should not be the case. The Zeus 3 will display ground wind from SOG. This is my preferred set up.

Something is wrong in your menu settings.

If so, then what is it?

I have gone into the menu on my Zeus 3 and this seems the most likely setting you are missing (see selected box):

Re: BS = SOG makes problems

You are correct.

I finally found a blog addressing this issue by a sailor in the PNW. He points to the same page as you do.

Thanks!
