Blindly following your GPS

many discussions get passionate when it comes to relying too much on GPS for navigation. Now this is not a boat but a great example non the less.

There was a post somewhere in the last week or so where the captain of some boat told his crew member to, "Wake me up when we hit [such and such] buoy".
You can guess the rest. At a pretty good clip, they ran right into the navigational buoy.

There was also one on Moreton Bay a while ago where a boat at great speed ran into the rock wall holding the nav beacon. I forget if it caused a death or only injuries. Reason was the card was out of date so the wall, that was a new construction, didn't show.

Even tho my eyes are getting older (moreso than the rest of me, it seems ), I've learned to trust them more than my GPS OR my charts here in the eastern Caribbean. Features on the charts that have been here for hundreds of years can be hundreds of feet away from where the chart places them.

Being used to spot-on accuracy, for the most part, in the US, I was a bit flabbergasted the first time I experienced this as navigator on a boat making landfall in the BVI in the middle of a moonless night.
