Re: Best Bahamas guide

Ka4wja, I admit to having a soft spot in my heart for the Yachtsmans Guide, having used it for a number of years. It's possibly the only sailing guide left that has actual pencil drawings of islands and harbors complete with Bahamian fishing sloops.

I remember a couple of young guys, back in the 70's, obviously down on their luck and sailing a 25 foot Brown trimaran, who asked a Fort Lauderdale chandler what they needed to cruise the Bahamas. He sold them a Davis hand bearing compass and a Yachtsmans Guide. Wish I knew how they made out.

I met Steve Pavlidis years ago at a boat show. Bought his Exuma guide and had a nice conversation with him. His description of Pipe Creek made me want to go there, and also not to go there.

Ah, those were the days!!
Speaking of updated information lol -
Warderick Wells is the center of the Exumas National Land and Sea Park.
That entire area is a no take zone.

Re: Best Bahamas guide

Mike,
Yes I am fully aware of that, I'm a long time member of the Bahamas National Trust, which raised the money and bought islands, hired biologists, and paid for the implementation of the Bahamas National Parks....
These are NOT gov't funded, but rather funded by private contributions and park fees!!!
I suspect that most of my fellow US citizens are not aware of that???

(Oh, and have been there recently..)

I was just reminiscing about days long gone by...
Sorry if that was unclear...

Re: Best Bahamas guide

No problem John, I figured you knew that, just didn't want any newbies getting confused.

Last time I was in Warderick Wells I learned that the Bahamian government only gives the park a couple of thousand dollars a year, but they sure like to tell the world about their beautiful park.

Re: Best Bahamas guide

No problem with draft. I did three years sailing the Bahamas with a 6'7" draft and never went aground. You just know there are places not to go into. I first did the Bahamas in a 3'9" draft Morgan Oi 36 in the middle 70"s. Went aground all the time
Have a great time. See you the end of Feb in my new Jeanneau 39i with a 4'11" draft. What a luxury!

No problem with draft. Ok.
I'll be anchored about the end of Feb. just past the Barretarre mailboat dock. I'll buy you a beer at the "Same Old Place".
Or Norman's Fishermans Inn if he's still got it going.
