You, the boating enthusiast, are the heart of the ActiveCaptain Community. With this community, it is our hope to inform and educate our users by providing useful information about important updates as well as to answer common questions about the community.

What is the purpose of the ActiveCaptain Community?

The community is meant to supplement your chart. Here, you will find information specifically dedicated to boating-related activities and services. This additional content is created by other users, based on their experiences. These experiences can be in the form of details added to a marker or even opinions provided by adding a review or comment.
Simply put, the goal is for the community to provide additional attributes and surplus data, focused on boating-specific points of interest. This information is added and updated by fellow mariners based on their knowledge and experiences. This lets others benefit from the familiarity and wisdom of those who have gone before.

Why are reviews or comments so important?

Sharing encounters, challenges, successes and failures are all things that help a community. Posting or updating a review or comment helps other boaters make informed choices on the water.
We take our responsibilities to the community very seriously, and we are committed to doing our best to ensure the information being presented is appropriately evaluated. Reporting a review or comment is one way to let the community administrator know that additional research is needed. If a review or comment is in violation of our ActiveCaptain Terms of Use or has been left on an incorrect marker, it may be reported to the community administrator. We don’t edit reviews or comments, and we don’t remove content unless it has been determined that the information provided is false and/or violates our terms.

Tips from our administrator:

Report a review or comment to let us know there is a possible violation of terms or if the item is on the wrong marker. Providing as much detail as possible helps us make informed decisions when evaluating reported reviews.

If you do not agree with a review, we encourage you to write your own review to express your opinion.

Please vote for helpful reviews and/or comments. The default presentation for reviews and comments is "Most Helpful." This is determined by the number of thumbs up a review or comment receives. You can change the presentation by clicking "See All." The presentation choices offered are "Most Helpful," "Newest," "Oldest" and "Rating."

If updating a review or comment, be sure to also update the star rating, if applicable.

The more reviews and comments, the better. Businesses receive the "Captain Rated" award based on at least 10 reviews with a 4.5 or greater star rating. This lets boaters know they are top notch.

We are constantly working on improving the community with new ideas and features. With growing involvement and support from the boating community, we will continue to be the information leader on the water. We truly appreciate your contributions and collaboration for this community.

The Future — What’s Changing?

In the last decade, digital devices and technology have changed the way the world functions and does business. Consumers and manufacturers alike have turned to technology to enhance the interactive experience through real-time connectivity, virtually anywhere you are.

As technology advances, we work to keep the community updated. As a result of advancing technologies and other requirements, we are continuing to expand and improve the community by implementing several feature updates and changes. Some of these necessary changes will affect the BlueChart® Mobile app. Effective December 2019, the BlueChart Mobile app will no longer be supported. It will be unable to receive new data, and updates will not be visible in the app.

There are many mobile apps available for on-the-water charts that also support the ActiveCaptain Community. If you are looking for a supported app, you may want to consider one of the following:

Navionics
ActiveCaptain

Additional supported, third party, apps include the following:

Aqua Map
Coastal Explorer
MX Mariner
TZ Navigator
WilhelmSK

The Garmin ActiveCaptain Community is dedicated to improving and enhancing on-the-water experiences for all mariners. We are committed to the community and to ensuring that all mariners have and share an active voice on the water.

We have a problem that is serious to us. We are in Abaco post Dorian. We plotted our anchor position on our Ipad Garmin Mobile app for the storm. Unfortunately we find ourselves now on land and our anchors still in position.

We are not sure how this app was yesterday deleted but when I restored it there was no data. Looking at the Garmin site it says data cannot be restored as Garmin no longer support this app.

In the post above and seen elsewhere the support was to finish in December 2019 not now.

Obviously we have 2 anchors we need to locate so are absolutely desperate to restore our data.

Is there something we can do to restore the data until the December date?

Is the app and charts still on the device? If it is gone I have heard of no way to get it back. If it is still there you may have just been signed out. Go on WiFi or cellular and sign back in and you may have some of the tracks, etc.

Hi JKliens
I had to reload the app but signed in and absolutely nothing on the chart.

Re: A note from Garmin Active Captain..

Sorry to hear that. Did you lose the device and have to restore from backup?

Re: A note from Garmin Active Captain..

Hi no it appears one of us must have hit delete on the app in error. Not sure how that is possible but no other explanation.

Can't restore from a backup as no power post Dorian for the computer. Backup of the iPad is months ago so the Dorian anchor position will not be on it.

Sorry to hear of your loss of data. This should serve as a reminder to others, though, that regular, frequent backups are a REALLY good idea!

Re: A note from Garmin Active Captain..

You can get the app that way but you can’t get any charts to load. Having said that I do see that your own data does seem to be available so you might be able to salvage a waypoint from it if it happened to back up before closing the last time. It won’t show on any kind of chart though as the base map seems to be the only thing that can be downloaded to a new device. Good Luck.

Re: A note from Garmin Active Captain..

Not an iOS type person, but in Android we can have our position continually tracked (I'm guessing with the Apple brand policies on personal privacy that doesn't exist) and presented in a timeline format - if something like that exists in the iOS world it might help. Just tossing it out. Sorry to hear about your lost.
