12V LCD that works with iPhone?

I'm looking to use an app (Navionics) on my iphone for navigating. The iPhone has GPS, wifi, and cellular capabilities. However, the screen is far too tiny for practical use in the cockpit. I'm imagining there's such a thing as a 10"-12" LCD panel that runs off 12VDC and connects to an iPhone as a display repeater. I would mount it on the binnacle instead of the broken radar display that's currently there. Anyone heard of such a thing? If I can't find this type of display I'll resort to buying an iPad because that seems to be where the state of navigational art is heading.

The resolution of iPhone maps is low. Hence their very cheap price.
I think the resolution would be a problem when displayed on a 12inch screen.
The iPad maps are are higher resolution and still very inexpensive. These would be fine on a 12 inch screen.

Save yourself some misery and tinkering and just buy an iPad. In the end for your intended results you'll be happier!

http://www.amazon.com/LifeProof-1135...ef=pd_sbs_pc_2

This is the float accessory link at Amazon . Both this and the lifeproof case are available at the link. Together they are $180 two day free shipping with amazon prime. Good deal, prime, for those of us that use amazon daily.

Now all you need is an iPad. Wal-Mart was giving them away a week ago.

"and connects to an iPhone as a display repeater."
Not unless your iPhone has a disaply output, like a miniHDMI port. And then you'd have two delicate gizmos and a cable all vulnerable in the cockpit.
I'd also suggest using a dedicated tablet and I wouldn't be surprised if the same apps were available in the Android world if you wanted to dedicate a device, rather than have a larger iPhone doing all the i-stuff.

They make component cables that plug into a iPhone. They have RCA plugs on the other end that you can plug into a TV, my Sony Bravia has them & you can play a movie. I've thought of buying some to do what the OP is thinking of. There are 2 different types you can find them at the Apple store. Good luck

I have the iPhone version of Navionics on both my iPad and my iPhone.

I have the component video cables that I use all the time to watch videos, netflix etc. on a regular tv from both the iPad and iPhone.

I just tried to display the navionics app on the tv and it doesn't work. I have looked at the settings in the Navionics app and there doesn't appear to be any setting to turn external video on.

My understanding is the software developer has to write the code to use the external video (video out) features of the iOS. Unless the iPad version of the app has video or someone else has cracked the code, I don't think the iPhone/iPad Navionics app will drive an external monitor.

The iPad is a good solution for the boat but I find myself using the iPhone almost all the time. It's nice to have it "in hand" when I am on on the boat.

No it is component video. This is 5 RCA plugs consisting of R-G-B and Audio L-R.

They make a standard video cable as well. This is 3 plugs consisting of Video and Audio L-R. This cable probably compatible with more tvs, especially older ones, but the CV cable has better resolution supposedly.

I don't think there is an HDMI cable for the iPad.

I think Cotemar has the right suggestion. iPad is the way to go with the 12v plug. I use it inside the cabin and as back up for the C120. So far it works great. Also watch netflix at the dock, and play music. An iPad is awesome.

After looking at the Otterbox and other case devices I am leaning towards the LifeProof stuff. Non-waterproofing is the only concern I have with the iPad on the boat.

Oh, and overheating shut-down which happens a lot.

I wouldn't repeat the stuff to an LCD at the helm. I'd use the iPad directly with a proper case. I definitely would use the iPad on a Salon TV for entertainment however especially if more than 1 person wants to watch a movie..
