Windlass without chain locker

i own a islander 36 which has a shallow depression on the bow with hatch for the ground tackle, no "chain locker" with any fall whatsoever. i currently am using a 40+lb plow w/ 50+ft of 5/16th chain and 250ft of 5/8" nylon triple twist. it all goes in the rode stowage very nicely.

i would like to add a windless to recover the ground tackle, is there a way to make this combination work.

thanks for all your advice

Re: windless without chain locker

there are ways to install a windlass, will have to be more likely an horizontal as there will not have room for a vertical windlass motor.
Normally will modify the hatch to acomodate the windlass
here is a pic

Re: windless without chain locker

A horizontal windlass with a short fall under is trouble. Been there done that, the chain piles up and then jams the windlass.
Maybe a vertical would work mounted behind the chain locker on deck? The chain goes around the windlass and falls into the locker ...open doors?
The other possibility is make your chain locker deeper... there must be more depth under it up there in the bow.
On the boat in my avatar, I made a sturdy vertical windlass mount that was bolted inside the chain locker to the aft bulkhead and floor. I cut the locker doors to fit around the protruding windlass.

Re: windless without chain locker

I have a Islander 34 and use a vertical windlass to retreave the rode to the deck and then manually store it in the shallow anchor locker. A Horizontal would work if it's raised up high enough. For a I36 vertical may be better.

Re: Windlass without chain locker

I would look at a pvc or fiberglass tube leading from the point the chain falls off the windlass to under the V-berth which is where the chain should be anyway. Most windlasses require a fall of 14" to 16", more always being better.

If you cannot get a reasonable fall distance below the windlass you will be hand feeding the rode every time.

Re: Windlass without chain locker

If you can't modify the locker, consider a 35# NG anchor and 1/4" G4 chain. That will be as strong as what you have but lighter and probably cheaper than the windlass.

Re: Windlass without chain locker

On our boat we have a horizontal windlass falling into a shallow locker. Chain does indeed pile up and then cause problems at the gypsy. When we retrieve the anchor we have to 'knock the pile', through experience we now know that we need to knock every 10 meters, and thus our chain is conveniently at those intervals.
