I'm not sure it's the same kind of chain stopper you are thinking of but we are using a pretty little stainless chain claw hook spliced to a piece of line to an eye on the deck. The only draw back seems to be forgetting to remove it, so it jambs in the windlass.

OP: Do you mean a deck mounted stopper or a chain hook for a snubber?

I just bought one from marinepartdepot.com. They had a sale and it was about $31 vs $80 something. I haven't installed it yet but it seems adequate. Nothing like the ABI unit I picked up by chance, but that was just a lucky fluke.

Ah ha, here it is. Still on sale.

The claw hooks are quite effective but, like Guy, have also heard people forgeting to release them and then jamming. Im looking also to install a chain stopper and will be going for a simple design - s/s constructed cheek plates/base with a s/s rod that will feed thru the chain link and thru the cheek plates. Designed so to avoid bending the rod when forgetting to remove!

I mean a deck mounted actual chain stopper. Lewmar makes one that looks ok, and our marine store has one that is simple, but as I was snooping around the packaging, it says "stainless" but it's from Taiwan, and it's "304" stainless not "316".

We installed our two ABI chain stoppers ( click here to see them Chain Stopper) in spring 2004 and have used them extensively since then.

I would not want to single hand a biggish boat without them. They make it so much easier to manage the anchor deployment and setting than trying to use chain hooks.

You can read more about them at our web site: GROUND TACKLE

Hi, I made my own one because the store ones did not spread the load to the deck. Its easy to knock up, if you have a welder and some stainless steel lying around. I started a thread sometime ago on it let me find it for you...

I can send you the drawing if you like...

There is a Maxwell for sale in another thread right now...but I can't find it. I swear it was there, just a moment ago.

To re-iterate the reason why we mad our own one, is I wanted 6 x 1/2 inch bolts not four, and I wanted them over 10" distance...1/2" chain and 66,000 pounds of boat.

Sea-Dog makes a very nice one from type 316 stainless. Their prices are usually pretty reasonable. I don't carry it in stock but I'd be glad to special order one for you.

Thx, all, for the good advice. I'm working on a fairly unique anchoring setup for my Hughes 46 trimaran. If I works, I'll share the info...heck, even if it doesn't work, I'll share that, too. Aloha, Mike

I've settled on a Lewmar chain stopper with lever in 316 stainless. Seems to work well. Thx for your comments...

A note on the Lewmar; a friend bought the 3/8 one and it didn't fit the G40 chain he was using... Went up a size and all,was well.
