Question Which Knot

Sorry guys but I have not done the amount of anchoring in extreme conditions that many have but.....

At present we have 50m 10mm chain and 20m 18mm 3 strand nylon.

If I need to extend the rode in an emergency what knot is reccomended as 18mm nylon does not see that pliable.

Re: Which Knot

I love bowlines. But they could easily chafe each other.

A fishermans knot with Fig8s in the bitter ends is less likely to chafe or unravel.
knots Thats my 2c

My idea with the bowline is basically make 1st bowline then take other line up through the bowline, round the back of the 'loop' then back down through and finish as a bowline.... basically a reef knot secured by the bowline knots...
Sorry if I explained it badly... over simply..

Re: Which Knot

I agree with boatman 61,

two Bowlines with the loops reef (square to you Americans) knotted together.
A double sheet bend would also work but could be tough to undo, how about the Carrick Bend, also a very good know under these conditions.

Ultimately, I would probably splice, it is the only way I would trust it. All knots weaken the rope except the splice.

Zeppelin Bend

The Carrick bend was developed for joining very big/stiff ships lines and would also work, but 18mm is in the grand scheme not that big. The sheet bend would also work, but is more likely to jam and does not have as nice leads as the Zeppelin.

While the above mentioned 'double bowline plus square knot' would work, it is not (IMHO) ideal. It is a solution using essentially three knots (each of which weaken the line and each of which can jam) where only one is needed.

For any knot used in this sort of critical application, I would whip the tails back onto the loaded line to prevent any possibility of slipping.

For our drogue rode I occasionally join two 300' lines. The end of one line has a spliced in thimble and I tie the end of the other to that thimble with an anchor bend (with the tail whipped back).

Re: Which Knot

what I've done that allows me to easily join short rodes is to splice thimbles at both ends and join with a shackle.. I really don't like knots in my anchor line..

+1 on the carrick bend......but I only say that as i can tie one in a hurry and the zepplin keeps me in knots for hours

Re: Which Knot

Thanks to all for contributions.

SWMBO got a bit worried when I said I was going to the garage for some rope!!

The zeppelin does seem to hold well and not slip, just have to see if I can remember how to tie it.

As said the beauty of carricks and bowlines is that everyone knows how to tie them.......................

Thanks again

Re: Which Knot

I have always put eye splices with thimbles into both ends of any anchor rode onboard, but I have read that one might as well just dispense with the thimbles so you can just run one eye spliced loop through the other to join two rodes without any hardware, no chance of a knot coming undone, possible to do easily in the dark on a pitching foredeck, and very high strength. In fact, some folks (not many) seem to recommend just dispensing with the thimble at your chain connection and running the loop through the shackle and back around the line, essentially dividing the strain up amongst two full thicknesses of the line. The theory seems to be that capsizing thimbles, or rusting thimbles, or collapsing thimbles, are all potential weak points. And, just maybe thimbles aren't really needed in this situation. I can't see why this looped line over a shackle could possibly be any weaker than the typical rope to chain splice that so many seem to rely upon. In fact, those rope to chain splices, with the small individual strands of the rope making sharp turns over the very small diameter wire of the chain always worry me.

Re: Which Knot

For joining two ropes I always use the double fisherman bend. It is very compact and secure. Figure eight bend is also very secure and easy to tie.
