Volume of Chain (Storage Area)

I'm building out a new v-berth and want to plan accordingly for storage of chain. I'll have about 150 feet of 5/16" G40 hi test chain. I have no idea of how much volume this will take up, as I've always used short chain/nylon line for anchor rodes.

Can you please give me a rough approximation of about how many cubic inches or feet I'll need to stow this chain?

Thanks much.

Re: Volume of Chain (Storage Area)

No, because there are too many variables relating to the shape of your anchor locker, whether you coil down the chain in a bucket, or let it fall in a heap.

I would suggest you go to a chandlery, tape measure in hand, and go look at a barrel of 5/16" G40. The barrel will contain X feet of chain and will be a cylinder Y inches across and Z inches tall. Figuring out the volume of a fraction of a cylinder in cubic inches or cm. or king's noses should be Grade Six math after that.

Re: Volume of Chain (Storage Area)

I bought 100' of 5/16" G40 a while back and it filled a 5 gallon bucket to about the normal liquid level. One gallon=231cu.in. so 150'=1732.5cu. in.

Am I crackers to think that chain takes less room than rope?
I feel it does as it kind of conforms to the space and condenses on itself.

Depends on the rope!

150' of Yale cordage nylon 8-plait versus 150' of nylon 3-strand.

Re: Volume of Chain (Storage Area)

I'd estimate about 2 cubic feet for 200 ft of chain. Avoid the old idea of trying to route the chain under the V berth! Been there...tried that!
