Thanks Steve.

You have provided invaluable service in gathering this data. You deserve more than credit & applause.

The Patreon idea makes good sense.

I’m looking forward to your CQR, Vulcan, Ultra testing.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

And, I appreciate your candor Steve with the end of your latest video. I for one find your videos so helpful that it is a slam dunk to subscribe to you on youtube and make a modest monthly contribution via patreon. I hope others consider this as well as a small amount by all of us can really enhance your ability to keep testing. What you are doing is unprecedented and as much of an anchoring breakthrough as new gen anchors. Also, I believe the Viking anchor (skeptical as I was) may have been aided in its adaptation of the rollbar concept by seeing liabilities of existing anchors in your videos and attempting to address them.
So your work may continue to advance anchor technology significantly!

I am lying to the Ultra as I write this. No video or reset testing yet, but I can report that 4 sets at 4:1 scope (or less), happened instantaneously. One location is in an area of very heavy weed. No problem.

Thanks malbert, If my testing is advancing anchoring, that is great. Ultimately, I would be most satisfied if I were to conjure up a new anchor development myself.

Correction. My "area of very heavy weed" was found (during the anchor retrieval) to have very little weed.

Test of the 21kg./46lb. Ultra anchor completed. Unfortunately, water clarity was low for this test.

Have you read Drew Frye's book? It includes some good data on how much yawing affects both load and soil compaction around the anchor. Second best thing I've read all summer, only because the best was Ted Chiang...

Have not read the book, but your suggestion of cruising around with the load cell is a good one.

Ideally, I should lead some non stretch line aft (inside pilothouse?) and place the load cell there to keep it from being dunked in salt water. The friction of the line turning at the bow would be a detriment, but worth it if it means I could measure anchor loads anytime.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Thanks for another great test video Steve!

Any chance you could rank the Vulcan against the Spade, Ultra, and Excel?

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

Thanks Maud,

It is getting more and more difficult for me to rank the top performing anchors because they all do well in my tests.

Also, I worry that my 2 seabed types that I test in may be giving an incomplete picture. I REALLY need to test in more seabeds and test multiple sizes of the same anchor before I would feel comfortable giving the title of "best".

All that said, the Spade seemed to have a bit faster setting/resetting of the anchors you mentioned (45lb. Mantus is probably fastest of them all but the 13lb. Mantus suffered from mud fouling).
