Videos of Anchors Setting

Steve, I’ll add my appreciation for your videos. Your videos and Noelex’s photos have presented a wonderful body of work on the actual behavior of a variety of anchors. Thanks to you and Panope.

Absolutely... Steve's videos have revealed invaluable details and insights into how anchors perform. This data information and our own experience with a late night tide shift and an oversized Rocna ripping loose convinced me to sell the Rocna and get a Spade. It has performed flawlessly.

Extremely useful information.

Thanks Steve.

Ditto. Please add my thanks, Steve. My replacement for a rocna was an Excell #5, with the results demonstrated in your latest video.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

There is a good Youtube video in clear water of the issue of Rocna dragging on direction reversal after it has clogged with weed over muddy sand at the Youtube vlog of Sailing into Freedom, episode #235, titled The Rocna Anchor Fails. Sorry I cant include the link from my iPad version of CF.

This parallels my experience in the past with a Rocna when it plugged with mud and did not reset. We ended up using a Super Sarca which reset every time for us in the same bottom conditions in tidal rivers, and we have chosen a slightly oversize Excel for the new 50' cat for remote cruising.

Resetting has always been the concern with roll bar sugar scoop anchors and the tangential damage to sea floors

They don't have many dealers, and shipping is a killer, at least to the west coast of Canada. $150 with DHL for the 12.5kg Viking 15.

Y'all are welcome to send me an anchor, but testing will have to wait.....

Boat is back in the shed.

Steve, I am not sure which is more impressive, the boat or the shed that houses it.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I think you are right the mixed rode is what this anchor will see and probably not the problem. The scope is the same and naturally the weight of all chain will help it stay set at lower speeds but eventually, given enough force the chain will come up to the scope angle. I thought it was the mud, but then to see it drag in sand suggests to me it just doesn't have enough diving power, that is enough surface area at the right angle. At least that is my unscientific take on it. I was not impressed though. That's the same bottoms I have around here. Your videos are of incalculable value!

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

I don't think that Steve's fast rest actually represents reality of a changing wind/current. In practice it all happens v slowly and most probably the anchor will simply rotate while dug in.

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

My most recent anchor video (Mantus 13 lb.) prompted a competing anchor manufacturer to send to me, a similarly sized unit for testing.

This is a 17 pound (16.4 on my scale) Sarca Excel #1 of galvanized steel.

The forthcoming test may prove very interesting as my test vessel may have enough power to exceed the maximum holding power of the anchor (like the above Mantus test).

Unfortunately, my part of the world is under a mandatory coronavirus lockdown. I'm pretty sure anchor testing is not an "essential" activity.

Stay tuned.....

Steve

Re: Videos of Anchors Setting

As "future anchor tests" are on my mind, I'll mention two other test anchors that I have recently acquired:

A 45 pound GENUINE CQR in good, used condition (given to me by an individual). Note that my previous CQR test anchor was not identifiable as GENUINE.

A 33 pound Spade S80 in good, used condition (found on craigslist for a nominal price).
