Re: Upside down Rocna - solution?

Thanks for all the thoughts on this. First, you can't reach the chain ahead of the roller except by boat hook.

Second, I think Jim is right. We have been lifting at dead stop, but any forward way & the anchor flies along upside down very nicely ... So perhaps reverse is an answer.

DW, I'll have a look at that link. I'll keep at it. Tx all.

Re: Upside down Rocna - solution?

As suggested earlier in the thread, adding an Ultra swivel will solve your problem with the rocna coming up bass-ackwards. The problem then will be, that you've added such a nice looking swivel... you're going to want to add the Ultra anchor to sweeten the look of your bow.

You can try one of these Righting Swivels. It brings the anchor up the correct way everytime.

Re: Upside down Rocna - solution?

I think this may be related to anchor roller geometry. On our cat we have a 4" roller that sits atop the crossbeam. Our 33kg Rocna often comes up reversed, but as soon as the shank starts to come up over the roller the anchor twists itself upright. We have never had to resort to swivels, chain twisting etc.

Re: Upside down Rocna - solution?

A swivel will not ensure that the anchor comes up "right" every time. It does make it easy to then orient it correctly by pushing with a boat hook, etc. A swivel does introduce an additional weak link in the system, and there are many reports of failure... even for the fancy and expensive models.

FWIW, we removed the swivel from our rode some years ago. When the anchor comes up backward, I simply twist the chain briskly, until it jumps a half-turn in the groove in the roller. Not a big deal with our 10 mm chain and 60 lb anchor. Might be daunting with a bigger anchor...

The Ultra swivel is different and unique in several ways. It's stronger than the chain if sized correctly and does insure that the anchor comes up oriented the right way.

Otherwise, You are correct in your assessment of other "off the shelf" designs.

That's the Anchor straightener I mentioned earlier. Brilliant things, way cheaper than a Ultra and we know for a fact they do sort out backward anchor issues in seconds. In fact Craig Smith had a video on showing them in action on a Rocna. There was a continual backwards issue with a boat way back in Rocnas early days, the straightener fix it instantly. This latest Rocna backwards thing is newish though, not sure why.

The strength of these is fine and the smaller ones will fail around 4400kg, the larger around 8100kg so G40 chain will fail before they will. I've pulled a fair few apart over the years. We see the old myth of weak swivels a lot and do have to laugh when a fair few who say it only have low grade chain attached to a low holding power anchor, both of which are way weaker than even just average swivels. But swivels are like most things these days, there are shockers and there are some that are magnificent. The problem we all have is being able to tell the difference between the good and bad, often it's not easy even for us pros.

Makes perfect sense! We'll set sail right away.

It's gotta be 50/50. I still haul by hand, and it's 50/50. May be we finally found a downside to windlasses!

Re: Upside down Rocna - Solution?

Why does there need to be a swivel at the end of the "Anchor Straightener"? Would not just a regular shackle at each end work? If the distance between the bow roller and the windlass was quite short that might be a problem but otherwise?

No thanks. It would bust going over the bow roller. Also, no SS in the middle of a galvanized chain/anchor. I prefer a forerunner and the large D shackle with oval pin.

Our ROCNA 55 comes up wrong too. I'm on the bow to wash chain so a boat hook easily spins it. It will roll over if you bring the shank up that way but it is a bit violent.
