The "BEST" anchor

Ok guys, everybody has an opinion on this one so lets hear it.

I don't think there is one or at least I don't think that "one" anchor alone would be the best choice leaving all the rest up in the air. I would have at least three and at least two complete rodes with at least one all chain.

I think you need to take a bigger picture look at the whole system. You have rode, windlass, and anchors to consider so that you end up with a total package. All these need to proper sizes for the boat you will use and the waters you will frequent. The last part that is important is the money. The anchors alone won't be the majority of the cost.

I'm glad no one's actually turning this into another anchor thread. Unless we will also go over guns, disposable vs. cloth diapers, staying or leaving in Iraq, and religion, all in this thread. :-)

The best anchor and the best boat, is the one that is paid for.

That being said, I just ordered a Rocna...Have heard the buzz and read the reports, finally ordered one.

(Actually ordered 2, my buddy had made the same conclusion so we combined the order, 5% discount for 2 Rocnas.)

I did a bit of homework before I picked up the phone and shelled out good dough for these "newbie" anchor thingies, but I am confident I will sleep good in the future.

Will keep ya posted: Going for the Exumas in June: Plan to anchor about 40 times on the trip. There will be some squalls involved, some current and some bad holding grund..Normal sailing and island hopping in other words...Full report will follow.

CYS Man - Sorry, I should have refered to the first post.

I have a Super Max 12, an 18 pound anchor. My other anchor was a 13 pound West Marine fluke that I could not get to set at over 2500 rpm's with my Merc 50 bigfoot 14 X 10 prop. I can get the Super Max to set at 4200 rpm's (1000 pounds of pull?) without draging in Fl and Bimini sand/mud. Suggest that you take a look. Just keep the scope at 3 to 1 or less.

I do not think that it is being stocked outside the USA.
