stop rope anchor rode chafing on bobstay?

How to stop rode chafing on bobstay?

I have just bought a 19' dinghy.
The dinghy also Has a small bowsprit and also a bobstay.

I have never anchored such a set up before.
Dragging? My history has been cold water, higher latitudes and serious consequences.
I fear dragging. I fear chafe. I struggle to sleep.

My answers have been: Heavy anchors, heavy chain, lots of scope and good chafing gear.

But now I am puzzled.
This small dinghy has a tiny foredeck, no pulpit and I wouldn't want to be slipping and sliding on it in a cold dark night, forget wet sleeepy and a feared.

I will be using 19' of chain = the rest rope rode. I have heard of people using the big ring at the water line - with a carabiner in some fashion to keep the nylon rode below the bobstay, using a retrieval line to retrieve the anchor. Yet I am puzzled as to how this works? Where does the rode come back up & over the topsides? Somewhere a few feet back from the bow? How does this affect how she lies?

I seem to need a drawing to show me. Words are not doing it.
Suggestions?
Comments?
Questions?

p.s. I did search this forum 'bobstay/bowsprit' & got a few hits - again lots of words but no diagrams of 'how' 'where' this 'attach a ring to to bottom of the bobstay system' actually works.

Only 19'? I might ...
  • Attach a ~ 6' line to the ring, with a spliced eye on both ends. Luggage tag one end to the ring. The 6' line stays on the ring when sailing, cleated off to the bow cleat.
  • Place a prusik hitch on the rode (after deploying) and clip the prusik sling to the above line. Ease the rode and cleat (but there is no tension on the rode) until the tension is on the 6' line and prusik sling.
The prusik sling should be a sewn Dyneema climbing sling ($8), but you could splice or tie one from small cord. Very simple and you do not have to reach down. You do have to get to the bow cleat, but that is probably a given.

This system woks on much larger boats.

If you have a strong point (cleat?) on the bow try a snubber.

Because of the difference in pull angle, it would be optimal to have a separate fitting, just below.

Still, in most cases and in smaller boats this is not something I would cry over.

Re: stop rope anchor rode chafing on bobstay?

The rode, chain or rope, still goes over the bow roller as normal. It is the snubber that feeds through the ring at the bobstay fitting. When stowed, both ends of the snubber are on deck, with the middle passing through the ring. You can messenger it out with a thinner line while not in use, so there's only the thin messenger going from the deck, down through the ring, and back up again.
In use, you attach the snubber by whatever means you like best (Thin's method is good) to the chain just past the bow roller, then let out more chain until the snubber comes tight. As you bring in the anchor, simply detatch the snubber from the chain as it approaches the roller. No need to ever get near the waterline.
I posted a sketch of this is another thread just yesterday.

KISS principe here, no additional rollers or complex bulk. A simple snubber line from the away-side of the bobstay with a even simpler simple magnus hitch (+plastic reinforced hose pipe for anti-chafe reassurance). On a rolly day just add more line out or if you’re a bit of overthinker - add a proper mooring snubber for more elasticity and dampening effect. Even on those rare occasions, when the boat’s lateral wide swing movement makes the line go against the bobstay chain, it only very lightly touches it with almost no chafe at all.

Re: stop rope anchor rode chafing on bobstay?

I prefer not to put the anchor load [of higher load events like gales, etc. which can exceed 2000 lbs- see Anchor Chain Calculator app screenshot below] on the cantilevered bowsprit [and therefore partially on the forestay…] so I lead a bridle over the bow [not the anchor roller on the bowsprit] to either the P&S bow or mid-ship cleats. This puts the snubber leads and loads on strongpoints, and the longish bridle only contacts the bobstay infrequently during blows if the boat yaws broadside to the wind…

Every boat has different geometry, so this approach may not be work as well on some bowsprit designs.

FWIW

Cheers, Bill
