St Thomas Mooring

Hi, we are new to the island & looking to purchase a boat soon. Can anyone tell me how to go about acquiring a mooring ? Are they all privately owned? We live in Red Hook so one in Vessup would be great. Thanks !

The moorings are generally privately owned. Some times they become available via private sale. I have linked to a document that you may find helpful.

Re: St Thomas Mooring

Thanks Outlaw. I did go to that site prior to posting but I didn't find it very helpful. I guess I don't need a mooring permit if none are available to moor at??
So since they are privately owned does that mean no one else can have or use a mooring , and is it ok to just anchor out next to a boat that's moored? I'm sure that anchoring is not as safe as mooring but if that's the only option do u have any advice on that matter ?

Contact the Department Of Planning and Natural Resources @ 340-774-3320

You have to first own a boat to lease the seabed and install a mooring.

There are a couple of moorings in Vessup available for lease. Right now, it's all but impossible to get DPNR to issue mooring permits, and they will require you to first secure an anchoring permit before issuing you a mooring permit. I highly suggest hanging out with the boaties at Carrigas in independent boat yard or Island Time pizza at happy hour and asking questions to gather a good understanding. For instance, Pizza Pi was just kicked out of Christmas Cove by DPNR and they have an anchorage permit and even a business license. In STT, its all about who you know. Good luck..

The Harbor masters usually love the Skrew Moorings we offer. As It can be installed and removed in under an hour.

Talk to the boaties that live there. Go to Island time during Happy hour. Molly's too. Ask around AYH, read the Island Trader, mingle.. Look on the board at Red Hook Mail service.
