Spearing a Tire

The chain was coming in but the windlass was laboring. I was immediately concerned that Lofrans windlass I had installed three years before was having issues. It soon became apparent that the anchor was bringing up the issue with it. The Peregrine Sea: Spearing a Tire - the joys of anchoring. I thinks the Rocna has a sufficiently sharp point ....

Re: Spearing a Tire

I'm pleased to learn that at only 3 years your windlass was not, in fact, "Tired" out. Having read your blog, my only thought is that I might have left that thing on deck until I had reached deep enough water so that some other unsuspecting yacht might not suffer a similar indignity with less benign results, eh? Of course, hind-sight is 20/20. Iin the moment one might not think of such matters verses get this thing off my boat!

FWIW...

Ha! See that - yet another problem with the Rocna. I'll bet that never happens with other types of anchors. Watch - Rocna will never respond to this newly found problem with their product.

Re: Spearing a Tire

Be nice Jeffery - I like my Rocna, even if the sharp point wasn't in my favor, this time!

I had a similar experience with my Danforth. I pulled up a plastic milk crate full of rocks that someone was using as an anchor for a private buoy.

I carry 4 anchors onboard. The Rocna is the only one I've deployed for the last 2 years...

Glad to hear it works for you...

... is yours one of the old ones, or do you consider the Chinese version "good enough" for the safety of your ship and her crew?

By the way, Peregrine, did it put up much of a fight before you landed it?

Re: Spearing a Tire

The only times I've ever drug using my CQR was 2 times hooking a buried truck tires and 1 time hooked and rip out the dashboard off an 18' FRP buried fishing boat.

All anchors will hold if you get them buried in the clean bottom, not in a buried junkyard.

Re: Spearing a Tire

Yes, it was a fight - that tire really liked my anchor! Fighting with tires is alway fun, even in paradise. Says my friend Webb Chiles "I think that the world's anchorages are filled with tires. I once caught on in Papeete, in 60+ feet of water and dragged the length of the harbor in EGREGIOUS. Fortunately without going ashore."

Re: Spearing a Tire

I had a friend who anchored off of Key West some time after Wilma. No matter what he did, he couldn't get his anchor up so he called Tow Boat. They assisted him and had to call in another boat. They eventually pulled up a full mainsail wrapped around a motorcycle and a bunch of other junk washed into the water by Wilma. The picture showed him in front of this pile that was taller than he was.
