Something better than anchor bag?

My 26' has an anchor bag that get tied to bow, and it works for what it is. Nice that it is portable so easy to bring back inside the cabin at end of trip, but I find it clunky since I am manually loading it as the anchor comes in.
I do not have a chain locker on this boat, so whatever I use, it has to mount on top of deck.
I was thinking maybe a simple box would work, but maybe that is dumb if the boat keels over in a strong wind, it could get pretty exciting if the entire chain fell in the water and right in the middle of a big breeze.
What other ideas are there?

This seems like a perfect question for the Macgregor ownerís group. You have a great resource in other Macgregor owners who have wrestled with this.

Why not use a milk crate, and tie it to the bow pulpit? I wouldn't trust bungee, but you could use line with a caribiner. It stays open by itself, but still easy to carry to where you want to leave it. And, the water drains out.

Milk crate is a good idea. I use one for to hold the rode for my spare anchor.

We use a plain old duffel bag for our stern anchor. Itís got substantial strap handles so itís easy to move.

On my 24í Seafarer I hung the Danforth anchor on the bow pulpit and carried the chain and rope rode in a milk crate. Easy to store in a cockpit locker, easy to bring on deck. Just remember to seize the shackle each time you attach the chain to the anchor.

I use a milk crate in my cockpit lazerette. before i anchor i take the bitter end to the bow, outside of rigging, and make it fast. I launch the anchor from the cockpit and back up. after well launched I go forward and adjust the length of the rode.
