We anchor virtually all the time, and never have had the need to haul up by hand (except once when I snapped the handle ). It does take a bit of time to haul up each morning, but the simplicity and solid nature of these workhorses make the trade off pretty easy to make. I enjoy the morning ritual of cranking while sipping my second or third cup of coffee .

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I have the ABI/Plath windlass... do you know where you can get parts for it? I need a handle.

But honestly, if it’s just the handle you need then I’d make one. I just did that for my bronze plath windlass. A steel bar and a grinder does the trick.
