Shackles - Chinese vs Other

Chinese products are somewhat reminiscent of imports from Japan in the late 1940s and the 1950s. One never knew what you were going to get, or so I have been told, regarding quality and dependability until quality control began to reign in all the cottage industries.

WM will take them back. In the US if it isn't stamped CM, Crosby, Acco, or Chicago I wouldn't trust it on anything critical.

Very true.

Having stacked a lot of steel and and worked under the loads, we inspected every shackle, sling and chain constantly. I would do the same now with anything my life and boat depended on it. If the chain is peanut shaped-toss it.

I think exercising a little common sense goes a long way. I have a variety of types of shackles on Insatiable - it is a reality that the budget is small and the work list is large. But the shackles on critical applications (anchor chain, running backstays, etc) are good quality name-brand, and the non critical applications have the no name shackles.

Not a fair comparison as the bridge was still useable. Here you can see commuters on their way to work the day after the collapse.

I'd avoid Chinese hardware in critical applications. (although my Neil Pride sails, from Hong Cong, are World class).

By far the best, most reliable anchor shackles are made by Crosby. They are intended for industry & are not in a lot of marine stores. I like the red pin ones with a cottered nut, rather than mouseing the pin. They have some high test ones too. Mark

Here's what you need. $10. It's what I use. I can't imagine it could be worthwhile to save a few bucks for a Chinese shackle of questionable quality when your boat is at stake.

3/8" HT (WLL 2 ton) perfect for your Gemini 105 which is probably using 5/16" HT chain. The 3/8" shackle is the largest size you can use in 5/16" chain without adding an over-sized end link. If you're using 1/4" chain you will need to go down a size to 5/16" shackle. Stick with the Crosby Hi Test and you won't go wrong.

I have no affiliation. Hamilton is a chandler that caters to Maine lobstermen and they don't like crappy stuff.

BTW there is no way the Wichard shackle of equal size will be stronger.

Actually I'm using 1/4" with the Wichard shackles.
