I have a Beneteau 393 with CQR anchor, 50 ft. chain and 20 ft. rode.

I recently attended a cruising seminar where the speaker recommended a second anchor on the bow, ready to deploy.

How would I do this on the 393? There is only one anchor roller on the starboard side. The anchor locker is not partitioned

Welcome Mark,

Lots more info on 393's at the 393 site.

Remove the stemhead fitting and take to a stainless fabricator. I also got the dealer to partition the anchor locker.

Definitely would want a second anchor if the primary is a CQR.

50' of chain and only 20' of rode???? That has to be a typo...hopefully you mean 200' of rode. 70' total is not enough
I have the anchor locker partitioned but keep the second anchor in the locker rather than on the roller. I use a Rocna with 300' all chain and a Delta (spare) 25' chain and 200' rode & also have a Fortress aft with 150' of rode and 25' chain

I have a 393 and just use one anchor and lots of chain. I have 80 meters chain.

To have two anchors with short bits of chain wouldnt be too helpfull imho.

Currently its squalling here to 30 knots or more, i am in 5 meters of water and have 40 meters of chain out.

If i were you i would get more chain and a better anchor... I dont think the CQR cuts it anymore.

Just a question out of curiosity. I once saw a Bene (of about 39 feet or so) anchored, and the rode was chafing alarmingly on the second anchor that was mounted on the bow, similar to the claw in your photo (below). Is that an issue, in your experience?

Can't say I've ever had that problem. I use all chain and a snubber which is led over the roller. You will notice in the photo the port anchor roller is slightly shorter than the starboard (primary anchor) one. The snubber is far enough forward to clear the claw even if it's at a 90 degree angle which of course it never is, unless you're dragging badly.

Yes, I can see what you're talking about. Your arrangement looks like a pretty good use of space.

On reflection (it was quite some time ago), I think the boat I saw was actually on a mooring and only had a single anchor on the bow. The line that was attached to the mooring pennant was rubbing against the anchor, enough that I could see some frayed strands. A charter boat, I think.
