Re: Seattle Anchoring Law Legal ?
I know this is an old thread, but was the original question ever resolved? I'm trying to figure out if overnight anchoring is permitted on Lake Washington anywhere other than Andrews Bay.
The ordnance originally quoted was that it's the only legal anchorage within Seattle limits, but there are plenty of other good looking anchorages on Lake Washington (in Kirkland and Bellevue) within an hour of Seattle. Do any of those permit overnight anchoring (1 night)? Yarrow Bay, Fairweather bay, Cozy cove, Juanita bay?
It's surprisingly hard to find the answer to this question. The "lake washington cruising" blog says Andrews Bay is the only legal anchorage on Lake Washington:
Lake Washington Cruising: Andrews Bay – Anchoring and Partying
Also this site says Andrews Bay is the only overnight anchorage on Lake WA and that Juanita Bay only allows day anchoring: http://3boatguy.com/lake_washington.asp
But Seattle Parks own site seems to contradict the above two sites, saying it's allowed in Juanita Bay, Kirkland marina, etc (see bottom of the page here): Seattle Parks & Recreation: Seward Park - Andrews Bay Anchorage
But, should I trust what a Seattle gov page is saying (when they don't really have jurisdiction over Kirkland and Bellevue)? I tried calling the parks dept but missed their closing time and they're closed on weekends.

Re: Seattle Anchoring Law Legal ?
I've anchored overnight in several places, including some that you mentioned. Although, it was years ago with a trailer sailer. But I don't think Seattle has changed that much as far as lake use. Just don't anchor out in front of some mansion, like Bill Gates place, and you should be OK.

Re: Seattle Anchoring Law Legal ?
My inlaws used to live straight across the lake from St. Edwards Park.
People anchor at the park for the night in the summertime and I've never heard of any hassling by the cops.
We would see several anchor lights across the lake when we were at the inlaw's house in the late evening.

Thanks, sounds like I don't need to worry too much. Just don't want to have a police boat telling us at 11pm we need to go back through the ship canal to home base. And I was thrown for a loop by those two websites that say there's no anchoring on the lake north of SR-520.
Everyone jokes about not anchoring in front of Bill Gates place, but that's on an exposed section of the lake without a good anchorage. If the point is that you shouldn't anchor in front of million dollar homes, well that's a concern because pretty much every anchorage along Bellevue/Kirkland has multi million dollar homes these days.

Re: Seattle Anchoring Law Legal ?
I was in the Gig Harbor area twice this year and there was a sailboat anchored there the entire time. This was off the the sand spit area near the bridge at Purdy but on the Key Peninsula/Wauna side. The downside is it's about 54 miles from Seattle.

Re: Seattle Anchoring Law Legal ?
Andrew's Bay is the only legal spot to anchor in the lake. If you want to do it anywhere else you are taking your chances. It comes to down to enforcement.
Seattle has a 24/7 harbor patrol coverage out of their base by Gasworks Park. You are highly likely to be asked to move if you anchor near the City of Seattle not at Andrew's Bay. Harbor Patrol - Seattle Police Department
Most of the lake is covered by the King County Sheriff out of their Kirkland base. Marine Patrol, Dive, and Rescue Unit
I hardly every see them out but I would not try to anchor in Kirkland.
Mercer Island has its own marine patrol that is active in the day during nice weather. I think they only come out for emergencies otherwise. Renton and Bellevue contract with them. City of Mercer Island - Marine Patrol

Re: Seattle Anchoring Law Legal ?
There are more than a dozen different jurisdictions with Lake Washington shorelines. Each have their own regulations regarding anchoring in their portion of the Lake. The rules were originally put in place to regulate the accumulation of derelict boats, and to control live aboard's. It is true that the rules just leave Andrews Bay open to overnight anchoring. Enforcement is done by the various marine patrol units who may have differing priorities. So the end result is maybe, but probably not. If your boat is anchored for several days the likelihood is high of meeting one of the marine patrols.

Re: Seattle Anchoring Law Legal ?
What about Eagle Harbor (Winslow), Appletree Cove (Kingston) or Sinclair Inlet (Bremerton)? Nice protected harbors, and ferry service into the Seattle area from all those points. I know a while back they cleaned up problems with bums on derelict boats in those areas, but I see boats anchored there all the time. That would seem to be a reasonable solution for a Seattleite who wants to live on the hook.

As I posted earlier, this is wrong. See the Kenmore municipal code at the bottom as an example. The problem as you partly bring up is multiple jurisdictions. I find some of the municipal codes impossible to decipher. The cruising guides say you can anchor in Meydenbauer Bay, but I haven't been able to confirm.
People anchor in Juanita Bay, but there was talk of changing the law because of all the noisy parties a couple of years ago.
I called the Renton police to ask about their code a few years ago. They didn't know, they said to call the Mercer Island Harbor police that they contract with. I said I wanted to know what their law was, not what Mercer Island thought it was. I was given unofficial advice that as long as I didn't anchor during Seafair or River days I probably wouldn't be bothered.
Kenmore municipal code:
8.20.060 Temporary anchorage or moorage.Share
Any vessel or watercraft may anchor or moor without being subject to the permit requirements of KMC 8.20.050 and 8.20.070; provided, that the vessel or watercraft does not remain within a one-mile radius of the original anchorage or moorage for a period longer than 72 hours out of any 120-hour period. [Ord. 98-0035 § 1(C) (KCC 12.46.060).]

Re: Seattle Anchoring Law Legal ?
Eagle harbor is Bainbridge island, you'll not anchor there indefinitely.
72 hrs on the hook.
