Malbert, and also to imagine Steve has done these vids with a manual SL 555 Sea Tiger.
I wonder how many drops and retrievals? There is 71 episodes.

Re: Sarca "Excels"

Hi all,

Great thread - lots of useful info.

I am about to purchase the Excel #5. What shackle are Sarca owners using, in particular to 8mm chain?

From a review of the chain specs, appears either a 8mm or 10mm Wichard HR stainless bow shackle would suit, although the 10mm Wichard pin through the Lofrans 11.1mm link would be tight.

Thanks,
JP

Take a look at Crosby 209A shackles. Higher working load than Wichard.

Re: Sarca "Excels"

Cheers...the Crosby 209A shackles look very good, but from their specs the smallest of these seem to have a pin diameter too big for the 8mm chain.

Rex from AnchorRight recommends using 2 Bow Shackles. He had a pictorial handout at various boatshows which I cannot find on his website.

(
Shop for bow shackles
Bow shackles

Bow shackles, also known as anchor shackles, are a more widely flared or O-shaped variant of the D-shackle format. One of the key advantages of bow shackles is that they’re much better equipped for handling multiple loads from different directions without it becoming a significant side load situation, as the rounded shape of the body makes them able to support heavier payloads at various points around their circumference.

Bow or anchor shackles can also accommodate far wider lifting straps than the narrower D-shackle variants (for all lifting and rigging jobs, the chosen shackle should be able to accommodate the strap or sling without requiring excessive pinching of the fabric). The trade-off for these advantages is a lower overall weight tolerance than an equivalent gauge D-shackle, provided the lifting is done strictly inline for the latter.)

Re: Sarca "Excels"

a lot of people recommend not to mix materials like this ie s/s shackle with galvanised chain, due to risk of galvanic reaction.

for this reason, plus resistance to 'work hardening' i'd use a galvanised shackle, of any make provided the swl was higher than the chain.

that having been said, we have a stainless steel swivel and not noticing any reaction

(btw LOVE our excel !)

cheers,

Titan 3/8" black pin bow shackle WWL 1250kg? Whitworths have them. Depends if you can fit the Bow part through the anchor slot>

Re: Sarca "Excels"

Cheers all for the input.

The WLL of the Titan black pin is higher than the Lofrans 8mm chain WLL, plus I see Titan uses a safety factor of 5 compared to Lofrans safety factor of 4.
If the bow passes through the anchor slot then the black pin Titan looks the go (thanks Bruce).
