Hi
I have a
simpson lawrence Volans 12V capstan with an
electric motor . about a year ago the chain was pulledout under load when the
winch was locked. That killed the
motor dead for some reason. Been operating it manually ever sincewithout a problem multiple times. now the capstan is very difficult to operate. need a lot of force to turn it clockwise to collect chain.
I removed all above
deck compnents, they are well greased and free to rotate. The spindle, or shaft is seized.
I can try to remove the below
deck parts -
gearbox and
motor. however it seems it may be difficult to remove and obviously to reassemble the - there is no room below the motor and
gear to drop the assembly as there's a compartment with a shelf flush up against the bottom of the motor.
has anyone experience with these S-L Volans capstans being seized? Is this likely a
gear issue? a motor issue? a stuck brake ?
I have an exploded diagram + order of
parts to dismantel the below from above deck assemblies
Is it likely ill be able to free the shaft to rotate easily again. I'm on
anchor and can't be without
windlass for long
Could not find much about S-L Voland capstan
maintenance or
repair in the
forums or online.
