Re: Rocna Recall - China vs Canada Quality Comparison

No proof is necessary to return the anchor to West Marine. Just take it back if you want to return it, no hassle return.

More bombshells from Grant over at YBM. I'm thinking that WM aught to doing a full product recall real soon now.

I know they will take it back if i wish.
Mine has made in NZ. Rocna says this where it was made - pre spurious batch.

I am happy with their explanation.

Now to make a roller to fit this beast.(i may need a bigger boat)

They said the 110 size moves slowly. It was incorrect of me that it was pre batch.
Not sure how long it has been waiting for me...

It's a big anchor (you will sleep well!) and I can imagine slow selling. Given what we know, if it was built in NZ it seems like it must have been built 2008 or earlier.

"Production started in China in late 2008 with the first shipments going to UK , Europe and NZ. Right from the start 420 or even 400 in some cases was used for the shanks"

Honestly if I were you, I would get a hardness test done - should not be too difficult or expensive or time consuming - there are even people who will come to you/the anchor to do it. You are trusting your boat and family to this anchor. It may well be NZ manufacturer but the leatherman test indicated some concern, and the word of the manufacturer is hardly gold at this point. You will sleep well if it tests good, knowing absolutely that you have the correct high tensile steel with no little niggling concerns in the back of your mind, and you can return it if it fails.

Just as a side comment, the galvanizing sucked on at least some of the NZ production (I have one). They look extremely good and smooth when new, but rust very quickly.

The last NZ 110kg that was in stock was the subject of a warranty claim by the distributor due to faulty and chipping galvanising. That was in march 2010.

The last shipment to Canada from China clearly identified as 420 shank 110kg was for 2 of them shipped in April 2010 along with 4 x 70kg and 1 x 150kg also clearly identified as 420 shanks.

If you post a clear, closeup picture for me of the shackle hole end then it may help to identify origin regardless of what the label says.

Lucky you, it is definitely a New Zealand made one and the shank is BIs80.

The grinding of the edges of the shank are a dead giveaway as the NZ made ones were all ground leaving a rough edge and clear marks from the grinding wheel whereas the China ones are all smoothly radiused almost to the point of being polished on the dgeas. The inside edges of the shackle slot on the China ones are also radiused smooth.

Enjoy your cruising with peace of mind.

Given your experiences making the damn things, Grant, I am a little surprised that you still endorse the pre-Bamburized models.

On the other hand, this has never been about Rocna making a bad anchor.

It's been about Rocna badly making an anchor.

Regardless, if in the rush to replace or return Rocnas, if I find a good NZ one at a decent price with the distinctive "rough finish", I would happily give it a shot in the circa 30 kg. size. Would be ideal for my boat.

I would wager, however, that few people who have them will be easily persuaded to part with them.

This one was made during the Bambury era and I have no problem endorsing the NZ ones as I know they were made with the Bis80 called for by Smith, we had enough of them metal tested during 2009 to know that.

Its never been about the design or the capabilities of the anchor if made from the correct strength material, its been about safety, ethics and honesty.

Good for you Grant.

Personally I don't sleep well on the boat with things niggling at me.

Are you really putting a 240 lb anchor on a 58' cat? Holy cow!

OMG you are right
I thought it was 110 lb, making my 125lb on 50ft look like overkill, but this takes the prize by a long shot.
