I guess get rid of chain, and then you have to grab jellyfish slimed rode to weigh anchor.

Who would have thought using a garden hose could be so difficult to use. (-;

Wife stands at bow aiming stream at chain
I press toggle and chain comes in
She does hand signal to stop and go if chain needs a bit extra.
Simple.

They can't sting your hands. Skin to tough on hands.

My method is similar too. Except I've got a remote for the windlass, so remote in one hand, hose in the other and hand signals for engine use.

Ouch. Do you remember what town was it?

It was one of the popular spots in the Gulf islands, back in the early '90s. But the memory is not that great - I don't remember which one. Sorry

Well the only real town at all in the Canadian Southern Gulf Islands is Ganges on Salt Spring.
While any effluent there would be largely Canadian, The smelly mud has nothing really to do with sewage. Stinking mud exists all over and is largely related to the amount of organic matter in the muck. Have a read of this

I'm wondering if the intermittent or surging chain motion associated with a manual windlass might help "wash" the chain during retrieval.

Been retrieving a LOT of chain with a manual windlass for about 40 years. Never have had much on the chain other than (clean) weeds.

Interesting article. Yes, I looked at Google Earth and I think it was the southern anchorage at Ganges. While the smell there may be explained by the algae, it is not the only source elsewhere. As you wrote, it is the organic matter in the muck. IIUC the lack of available oxygen in that muck prevents normal decay from occurring, which takes off when exposed to air. Stinky mud is common off old cities, but of course the organic matter includes everything that gets flushed down a sewer, not just human waste.

BTW no offense intended to Canadians: sometimes I can discern the different accents but probably not the smell of s***.

Interesting. I anchored at a dozen or so places around San Juans and Puget Sound so far and had mud on the chain everywhere except one or maybe two places. Tried to run the chain back and forth on retrieval with not much success in shacking the mud off. Anchor is not an issue, I pull it through the water for a minute or two while leaving the anchorage and it cleans it up. The chain, however, is bringing the dirt into the bilge where my anchor chain locker drains.

Nope. I wish I could say that is the case. Ha ha.

Lol. Yes easy. And I have foot buttons with my Lewmar windlass so plenty of hands free.

But, I found it took a lot of pausing and detailed hose work to aim between the links and get the tougher clumps of mud out. When I switched to the boat hook method the shaking back and forth took care of the mud more easily and completely. Anyway to each his own. I just mention because I had the deck wash, I think I’m reasonably coordinated with a hose, and on my setup found shaking the chain easier.

You do need someone to drive up as chain is retrieved so it’s mostly vertical and not under tension but that’s good practice anyway
