Did someone suggest a vertical windlass? I must have missed something.

re: Replace Manual Windlass With Electric (merged)

Sorry, I reposted this question and the photos didn't come through, so I got lot's of suggestions to use vertical windlass . . . I will probably just add chainpipe and see how the manual works . . . it seems like any electric strong enough will be $2500-$3000 . . . BTW-the handle seems stuck in the slot . . . can't seem to get it out to use the clutch . . . again, any thoughts?

Re: Replace Manual Windlass with Electric

Ok, now I found where someone recommended a vertical windlass. A new and different thread.

First off. You need to plan where to put your chainpipe and chain locker. Do that. Then you need to match your current chain to a new horizontal electric windlass. There are many makes but make certain you get one that will handle the chain that you currently have otherwise you'll buy a windlass, install it and then have to replace the chain because the windlass will not match.

Ideal and Lofrans are windlasses I'm familiar with but there are many others.

Ours pulls right out. Try soaking it with penetrating oil. I am guessing the handle was left in and socket (receiver) filled with crud.

I couldn't tell if the handle goes into a dissimilar metal slot or is it stainless? Penetrating oil as suggested (PB Blaster) or just squirting it with high velocity freshwater might help free it up. Be very careful if it is aluminum because it can get brittle with a bit of corrosion.

The socket on ours is bronze and forged as part of the drive-train that goes thru a bushing, housing and o-ring . Our handle is aluminum. It is however so loose fitting in either the socket ratchet position or in the capstan that I would never leave it on the windless and always stowed it in the cockpit locker.

Use a horizontal windlass deck mount. Just move it back from the original till it lines up to what you need.

re: Replace Manual Windlass With Electric (merged)

Mahalo . . . got the handle out using DW-40 . . . I'm going to put in a 90 degree chainpipe . . . does your windlass use the chain stripper that is shown in the parts/exploded view in the manual? if so, any chance I could get you to give me the measurements for this piece as I'm probably going to have to have it made (hard to find replace meant parts for this windlass). . . . One final question, I have a hole in the top of the windlass . . . I assume this should have a cover of some sort . . . also, is this hole used to lubricate the interior of the windlass . . . what kind of lubrication should be used?
Thanks Again
Pete

Re: Replace Manual Windlass with Electric

I started a thread trying to find out if anybody knows if the Lewmar Profish 1000 is a good electric windlass, no responses, really don't know what would be the best windlass for my boat, guess I'll just keep trying to gather as much information about the varied brands and models till I can come to a sound decision.

Prefer a vertical windlass with a rope capstan. You can use the rope capstan at almost any angle to kedge off or just haul the boat into a Med Moor where that type of harbor is experienced. A horizontal windlass will require a block or other way to get a fair lead into the windlass for off center pulls.
