Muir VR500A winch - installation and locking issue

Hi

I've had a Muir winch on my boat (2002) for some time and it always seems to have worked okay

Last week I was letting the anchor out and after some 10m the winch died.

So I've pulled the front of the cabin apart to get to the winch and found the winch is no locked in / spinning around the capsan until it hits the side.

This tore the switch wiring out of the solenoid when it spun around which explained why it stopped working.

I've had a look at some similar Muir winch manuals and they suggest there is a hole on top of the gear box in which you put a locking bolt in to lock the winch (see diagram).

I've located a few holes and put a long bolt in but it did not stop it spinning around.

Anyone got this winch and can show me where the right hole is, or better still a installation manual.

I've looked at the Muir site but they only seem to have other models

Re: Muir VR500A winch - installation and locking issue

I’ve got a VRC1250 and a manual VR500 but can’t find the manual or any mention of a VR500A, where did you find the model number? Here’s a pic of the splined sleeve, no bolts and just a retaining clip but for this to drop the motor far enough to disengage the spline, the bolt at the lower end of the main vertical shaft would need to be absent…. Yours is still visibly in place. Check the model number, here’s a pic of the spline type.
[edit] Ok, I see the model number in your photo, I’ll keep looking for the instruction/parts manual

Re: Muir VR500A winch - installation and locking issue

Thanks skipperpete

Model number was written on the winch and looks original.

I'll have a look for the large retaining clip but was not obvious at first glance (compared to the pic of the Storm VR600) .

Muir suggests the quick fit kit is an option

I've loaded up some more pics in case they help

Re: Muir VR500A winch - installation and locking issue

I decided to take the motor off and work out the retaining system and it soon became clear what the issue was.

There was a shorn off bit of steel / brass from the shaft and a bit of metal shredding in the top plate.

After unbolting the top plate, I found 4 hex bolts, all loose - one was severely bent.

On this model it seems you first attach the cover plate to the shaft holder
with the 4 hex bolts (underneath), and then attach the motor with another 4 bolts (10mm) on top of the cover plate.

I suspect someone in the past only fitted one of the hex bolts, which gave way and bent/ shearing off the bolt hole. Given there are 4 of them, why not tighten all 4 of them ?
