I called them "horns" because the two boats I showed with them are Greg Young "Bull" designs.

They have been around for hundreds of years. All the old sailing ships had them. Many large classic wooden vessels still do.

A better image than the wiki one.

I still have no problem with pennant and pendant being used interchangeably..

Ha ha ha ... I love ya MS. Your documentary skills are as good as always. I knew I'd pay for that comment. I note ol Cap Nemo was ready to have me flogged. Ah well. You'll notice I apologized in advance for raising the issue.
I was going to jokingly add that Brian Toss doesn't know jack but thought I might be keelhauled by the less astute.
Thanks for your generous compromise.
How 'bout dem Redsox? Think they'll ever win another pendant?

Aww c'mon after all that you're not going to let us in on your source that trumps the mooring industry, USCG, US Navy, Brion Toss, The Sailing Dictionary, Merriam Webster & more?...
I almost forgot a source:
Modern Marlinspike Seamanship Pg. 219 - Pendant (mooring) - A short rope or chain, usually with a thimble spliced in one end.
Nigel Calder also uses Pendants, with a "D", Cruising Handbook Pg. 64......

Re: Mooron pendent
Very sly Captain Sail,
I hit one or two of those "sources" you cited. Interesting: the first link sent me to a porn site. I only look at free stuff, but thanks.
Two was a miltary link that required much time to download. Besides, the military is not known for spelling prowess last I checked. Imagine the grunts writing these manuals. I say again: Ignorance is bliss.
My trying to convince all the pendanteers to change their erroneous ways is a waste of my last few minutes or seconds.
But hold on: A third link sent me to this:
pendant
Pronounced "pennant". A short length of wire, chain, or line used for a specialized purpose. A mooring pendant secures the boat ot the mooring, a tack pendant raises the sail above waves.
This, from Maine Sail's ringer citations. Presumably he read them but failed to mention the part about pendant being pronounced "pennant".
My work here is done.
Oh yeah.

Re: Mooron pendent
Well, I'm happy that there is a reasonable explanation for a bit of fun.
