maxwell windlass

Hi all
After reading the post on electric windlass use I've decided to make an emergency handle for our 2500 vertical my question is looking at images of the leaver / handle there's a nipple near the bend , what is its purpose in life ?
Cheers in advance

Re: maxwell windlass

Photo would help. Mine was a vertical but not a 2500 but there was no way to hand crank it. The handle which went on the top was solely for engaging or releasing the clutch.

Depending on the model, Maxwell calls your nipple a "pin" or a "spigot".

The end of the lever with the spigot is used when manually retrieving the anchor chain. The spigot engages a dog in the chainwheel. See your user manual (downloadable from maxwellwinches.com) or the graphic below>

Re: maxwell windlass

Thanks for the replies Alan and Raymond, thought mine didn't have a emergency retrieval system and I was just looking for the cluch release, but your diagram from the Manual cleared it up for me Raymond. I have the manual that I downloaded sometime ago but doesn't have that diagram, maybe I will just have to part with some hard earned and find one to buy.
