Maxwell 1200 windlass problems

Hey all,

I have a maxwell 1200 windlass that had stopped working on me. Pretty sure that the motor is bad, as I get voltage to the case of the motor when voltage is applied, internal short. Does anyone know of a place in Miami that could fix it, either a marine repair or starter place that could?

Also, I cannot find any parts online to source a new motor or a parts list to see how to take the thing apart. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Pat

Re: Maxwell 1200 windlass problems

Well I got the motor out and bench tested it. No luck. Took it apart and cleaned it, brushes look good, nothing out of the ordinary. Does anyone know of a good electric motor or car electrician in the Miami area that could fix it? Or where I can get a replacement short of replacing the whole unit $$$. ?

Guess no one has had to fix a winch before. Must be nice to just buy a new one. ;-)

Maxwell 1200, which one? Your blog shows a horizontal windlass, maybe a HWC1200?

If so, this manual might fit:

This place also has a lot of info:

Hi, try Maxwellmarine.com, under support tab you will find the manual.

Check on-line for an alternator or starter rebuilder, they can handle it. I liked the man that rebuilt stuff in his garage. When he took my 12v motor apart he said"smells like it's been hot"as he spit tobacco into a trash can. That's the kind of guy I am talking about, old school.

Spoke to a Maxwell rep at the Chicago Boat Show last week. He said that parts are available. Get the part number and then have a dealer order the parts for you. Defender and West can order as well as any local dealer.

Re: Maxwell 1200 windlass problems

Thanks Dave, I did end up finding the replacement motor for it. So just waiting for that to come in and I should be good for another 20 years! Thanks for the responses.
