Maxwell 1200 VWC Servicing (12v Electric)

Hello all, the above is a 1997 model and works well. We have had the boat three years and according to the handbook, its time to give it a service (clean and replace the grease / drain and replace the oil). I have no idea when it was last serviced.
Whilst the handbook is clear re the grease and oil, it is a bit light on with detail... however this forum does provide an explanation of user's experiences.
The 'here and now' question .... is it necessary to get a kit of seals and O-rings (as in Australia, these things usually cost a small fortune).
Looking forward to your feedback.
Many thanks

Re: Maxwell 1200 VWC Servicing (12v Electric)

Barney, you can get all the seals from any industrial bearing supply shop, even hee in Oz. The "V-seal" that goes on the main shaft may need to be ordered in (it is a VA-028)... many small shops don't stock these, but really, that is the only odd o ne. The local Maxwell chap recommended some specal goop lubricant rather than the normal oil, and I have used it with success so far... but the regular stuff seemed to work prior to that change.

Be sure to clear out the weep holes in the transition piece between the vertical and horizontal housings. If they get blocked and salt water gets trapped severe corrosion will result (aluminim housing, s/s shaft). Expensive lesson for me...

Cheers,

Jim
