What is usually done here with charter yachts (not a lot of time to get to know what the colours mean) is a table is drawn on the under side of the anchor locker lid.

It has lasted for at least five years and sometimes more, depending on how often we anchor and most importantly, it will go through the windlass gypsy without jamming. WG
I suppose I should have explained a bit more. There is one strip at 25 feet, two at 50, three at 75 and so on. You can of course change this and mark it at 50 foot intervals or whatever you like and it works fine. Sorry about that. WG

This is what I call lateral thinking. Well done!

They pop off gradually so 20 per mark will last a while
5 times the height of your bow from the waterline?

Here is your answer.. Drewan
It took me a while finding what to google.
I was surprised at how many chandlery sites do not have this item!
It is not exactly cheap but it lasts forever.

That is a very interesting product. I already have cable ties and that is a much more economical solution for me. Waterwayguy that is a great way to mark rode. I am surprised that it will go through the down pipe without trouble. Perhaps your windlass has a better setup than mine. Are you guys using the smallest size of cable tie?

Looks good, but doesn't quite meet the OP question.

Zip ties have worked for us. you don't need to get too fancy. we just mark the most commonly used length and can vary from that length as needed. we also do not cut off the "tail" as leaving it on makes it easy to see at night. in three years we have yet to replace a wire tie.

I knew that the 36 individual color coded zip ties that I used on telephone cable would come in handy. I guess at 1 per fatom I can get pretty deep. Humm I wonder if I have that much chain

Prize? Give it a break! Its the hight of the mast in case we turn turtle!

Naw. Its the bow roller to the water. So the first 12 meters is actually 10 meters under water. So calling 10 or 20 meters has that down, then I can calculate scope etc.

With putting the cable ties on we put some quite tight arounud the links and some loose, tails all cut off.

Happy anchoring and stuff those marina jockeys!

easy and obvious way to mark chain

red white and blue. i mark the chain with wire ties every 25 feet. i've been cutting off the tails but think i'm going to try leaving some of it on and see how that works. first red, then white, then blue. then start all over again.

works for us yanks and maybe the french too. other nationalities, pick your own national colors....

You do realize you're making fun with the Dutch flag, do you?! ;-))

The flag of the Netherlands is a horizontal tricolour of red, white, and blue. Introduced in 1572, it is one of the first tricolours and the oldest tricolour still in use today.
