Mea culpa on the misinformation. Truly sorry to have been the first to have posted second hand info as fact on CF.

I actually was serious, the snarky reply made me laugh, which I appreciated. Will need to master the emoticons to better express myself. Now where were we....?

Now to translate for all those parsing along:
Sentence 1: serious
Sentence 2: joke
Sentence 3: serious
Sentence 4: joke
Sentence 5: nonsense

Cheers!!

Re: Mantus Anchor or Rocna ?

The Sarca anchor has a solid roll bar which may have confused the Rocna salesman

The photos of the Knox anchor show a thin roll bar which suggests it might be solid, but I have not seen one in real life.

Re: Mantus Anchor or Rocna ?

I've had my Mantus a couple of months now and it's been in the water every day in Florida and the Bahamas. So far, it's performed 100%. Two thumbs up from me.

Re: Mantus Anchor or Rocna ?

I think I've had my Rocna for eight years now. Never dragged. Have absolute confidence in it. Used it from Texas to Bahamas and back, in a variety of bottom conditions. Several storms. Purchased it when there was no Mantus (that I recall), and before Rocna lowered the prices. That said, I have a dinghy anchor from mantus and a chain hook, and both well built. I think either company is fine and you would be wasting time to fret over which is better.

Re: Mantus Anchor or Rocna ?

Yes, I agree, I wouldn't part with an anchor that performed so well. My old fave, a Sarca, still has an honored place on my stern roller. I can't speak for the Rocna because I haven't used one. The Mantus is relatively new and naturally people want real world reviews before making the purchase decision. My experience with the Mantus has only been about 60 or so anchored days but so far I'm very impressed.

Re: Mantus Anchor or Rocna ?

I think that all of the new generation anchors work much better than the past generation anchors do. They (the new generation anchors) each have their strengths and drawbacks and for sake of this argument they are all within a few percent of each other in overall performance.

You really cannot go wrong selecting any one of them to replace your (insert older gen anchor name here).

I will be doing some extended cruising in a few years and at that time I will buy 2 Mantus 105# anchors for our cruise. One will go on the bow roller (replacing an 85# mantus) and the other will be dis-assembled and stored in case we lose the primary anchor. The 85# will be stored as well. I'll get a huge Fortress for its straight line pull capabilities which will be stored dis-assembled and a much smaller fortress for side pulls and the like.

That's the plan and I'm sticking by it (for now)

N.B. I sell Mantus anchors on the side and have a bias against Rocna for their checkered past (I've still not gotten over their decision to change to mild steel and the bent anchors that resulted - fixed now of course).

Re: Mantus Anchor or Rocna ?

I have a Spade and a Mantus, both on bow rollers. I think they are both great. I'd have no less confidence in a new Rockna.

Rocna and Mantus anchors look so similar. Is there really a difference?

I had a 33lb Rocna & 250ft of 5/16 chain which I lost. Presently my pick is a 35lb Manson. To my way of thinking both are equal.
I bought the Manson because Rocna dealers were too thin on the ground where I was at the time.
And I also have a Manson on the stern with 26ft of 3/8 short link and 100ft of 1/2" 16 plait.
Love Rocnas and Mansons to death. Reckon Spades and Ultras would be equally good. There's a common denominator : ALL are CONCAVE. Concave brings up mud but the burying capacity, given the correct weight and length of chain, from a physics stand point, is inarguable. IMHO.

In softer substrate like Chesapeake I've had measurably better luck with mantus than my former Rocna. I'm sure in firmer substrate they are more similar. Mantus seems to put more area and weight in fluke and Rocna in the shank which I assume sometimes keeps it from self righting in softer stuff

Mantus is built with lighter scantlings. They even weigh less than advertised. More susceptible to bending but this would be a very rare occurrence.

Rocna is more susceptible to becoming clogged with seabed and fail to re-set. This would be a very, rare occurrence.

Pick your poison.

Re: Mantus Anchor or Rocna ?

The morale of this story is that there's there are lots of really good anchors today. My experience e goes as follows;":

- Bruce (Lewmar Claw) its great in sand but drug in mid and clogged in grass (nearly beaching us)
- Fortress and Guardian are great for backup as they can be disassembled and therefore oversized. They're expensive and do not reset well. I only use for a stern anchor or for a Bimini moor to reduce swing.
- Delta is my present primary and it's never failed.

My playground is the West Coast of Florida and Keys. Definitely thinking of an oversized Mantus for a storm anchor, as I can just disassemble it and store it below.

We noticed the same during 8 days of pulling anchors off of Solomons, MD aboard the 81-ft Rachel Carson R/V. For whatever reason the Mantus seemed to be able to self right itself better in the soft mud. Based on your experience, you gave a reason for this about the Rocna and you might very well be correct.

However, we bent the much larger Mantus roll bar during one test and I would venture to say that it is not as strong as the Rocna roll bar.
