Manson Supreme Size?

Am gonna buy one of these babies for new Cal 29 ~8000# disp.

Factory comment:

Manson Supreme 15lb 18' - 30'
Manson Supreme 25lb 25' - 35'

My goal is to use as my everyday/night anchor while traveling. Rarely anticipate anchoring in rock. If I'm stopping for awhile, I have several other anchoring options available.

I'm leaning toward the 15 with some good 1/4" chain and 1/2" nylon due to my geriatric condition and lack of windlass. If I had a heavier boat, I'd have to use the 25 but ....

I do like to sleep at night tho.

I've got the 62 and displace 24,000. So you're a third my weight, which would be a ~20lb anchor. Keeping the ratios the same.

Get the big one, you'll sleep better.

in my personal experience i've found that any anchor less than about 25 pounds just doesn't have the 'heft' to dig into grass and sand. go with the 25 and you'll sleep better at night.

i've got the 45 pound manson supreme on my 20000lb boat. best anchor i've ever owned in 35 years of sailing/cruising. manson recommends a 35 pounder for my 37 foot boat, so i naturally went one size bigger.

I'm in the market for an anchor too.

I was thinking of doing the same thing. I think 25lbs is recommended for my boat but I'm looking at going up a size to 35. Someone told me that it would be too much but I want to make sure my boat won't go anywhere at anchor.

99% of cruising consists of staying put in one place - in all kinds of weather. in my humble opinion, anchoring gear should be the number one priority of any cruiser. the manson supreme is the best anchor i've ever owned; add a proper length of all chain rode and you will sleep better at night.

I found it thanks, now I need to figure out if its big enough for my boat. I like to up size so I may actually need a 60.
I will have to call mason to see what they think.

I always recommend going up one size based on the manufacturers recommendation. They are always conservative with their estimates and yes, bigger is better. Chuck

The Rocna sizing chart is also worth looking at at the anchors are very similar.

The 25lb should be no problem for a crab like you with two big strong claws and personally I would go for the larger one.

Get a chain stopper.

Can someone explain why boat length (as opposed to weight) should have any bearing on anchor weight. I would think that a ten ton boat, whether 30 feet LOA or 50 feet LOA, would require the same sized anchor. I must be wrong because the experts say that it's so... but how can this be?

Think I'll start with a phone call. I may I have the situation where the 15 would be adequate due to the lighter disp of the Cal.

I wasn't trying to save money. Maybe I will rethink the need for a windlass.

I was kinda thinking of hauling in with a cockpit winch but all chain won't work for that. The heft idea is something. I'm a sand and grass guy. But, that said, one doesn't always find a cove, as noted above. I've spent many rock n roll nights in Hawk Channel, always with concern.

Edit: Having read ALL anchor threads for several years, I'm sure I'll end up with the 25. (I also own 4 (count em) Fortresses, a coupla of 22# Danforths, and a bigass fisherman.
