I'm looking at upgrading my ground tackle to the Manson Supreme. I have two questions. First, which would you guys consider the better choice, the 45# or 60# anchor? The second question is, what's the difference between the stainless steel and galvanised anchors? I'm asking because the 60# SS is $2800 US and the galvanised is only $700. So what gives with that? Oh, almost forgot, this will be for a Catalina 38.

Re: Manson Supreme
First question, biggest one you and your boat can handle. Second question, stainless is for people who have too much cash and like to polish their anchor, galvanized is for people who really use them.

Lol. I figured that part out. Lol. I mean are there any other differences? Usefulness wise. Like is one stronger or longer lasting than the other?

Re: Manson Supreme
The SS one might last longer, but galvanised anchors last for decades.

Re: Manson Supreme
The galvanized anchor is stronger and the SS is prettier. You would sleep better with the 60#, and the increased load on the windlass is the equivalent of anchoring in 10 or 15 feet deeper water.

A galvanised anchor will warn you in plenty of time before it fails, via corrosion. A stainless steel anchor won't warn you, it will just fail

Ok. That's good to know. In that case I'll spend the extra 2100 on other repairs/upgrades. Thanks for the advice guys!

Re: Manson Supreme
Galvanised is practical, after 10 years or so you have it redipped and it will be good for another 10. SS is bling, they work the same, but the welds can pit and fail, I recently saw a length of 10mm SS chain that the welds were so badly pitted that is was a matter of when it was going to fail, not if!
Apart from specialist grades of SS keep it above the waterline.
Supreme a good choice, they work well in most bottoms, (weed can be problematic, hard rocky bottoms use the rock slot and you should be able to retrieve it 99.9% of the time)

Re: Manson Supreme
Have had my 45# Supreme nine years now. 45# will be plenty big enough for a C38. It's got a tad of rust on the tip now and the label has nearly come off the shank. The glue they use must be magic.

Re: Manson Supreme
My 45# Manson Supreme (galvanized, with 160 feet of 5/16" chain) held my 42 Catalina, over a mud and grass bottom, in 65 knots of wind in Tropical Storm Isaac. But, I still wish I had bought the 60# model instead.
