Looking for Info on Lofrans Tigres Gypsy #276H
I recently installed a new Lofrans Tigres windlass with the #276E gypsy (identified by the marking "10 P.30 3/8 HT" on the wheel) to replace an older windlass and for use with my 3/8 HT chain. But, the chain is jumping badly on anchor retrieval, so I'm thinking I might have the wrong gypsy.
I would be most grateful if anyone here has the Tigres windlass in use with the #276H gypsy and 3/8 HT chain, if you could comment on how well that gyspy works for you, and note whether your vertical chain links make contact with the central drum face in the gypsy when chain is pulled snug on retrieval. I'm trying to figure out what the differences are between the two gypsies as a predictor of whether switching from the 27E to 276H would improve my situation.
The 276H gypsy is marked "3/8HT 3/8PC."
Thanks!

I would especially like to know the measurement across the top of the teeth between pockets (as circled in the attached pic), and the depth from top of the teeth down to the surface of the drum at center.

I would like to measure it for you on mine but I am not sure what dimension you are looking for exactly. You circled an area and I think I follow the description, but can you edit the photo with extensions lines and an arrow with an "X" dimension so I can be sure we are talking the same thing. Any chance you have BB chain and got an HT gypsy?

Re: Looking for Info on Lofrans Tigres Gypsy #276H
I have a 5/16 HT gypsy on my Lofrans windlass so I can't answer your question.
If you haven't done so already, you might want to measure your chain and see whether it has worn or stretched. Measure the length of 10 or 20 links (from the inside end of the first link to the opposite inside end of the far link) while the chain is bar tight and then compare the average length of a link to the spec. For 3/8 HT it should be 1.22" for new chain. If significantly greater, your problem may be unrelated to the gypsy.

Thank you kindly for your assistance. I'm attaching an annotated pic indicating the "A" and "B" dimensions I'm hoping for.
I'm sure that I don't have BBB chain, as the results of checking 15 links with calipers (and the G4 marking on each link) suggests that they're 3/8" ISO HT.

Thanks for that. Yes, I've measured both individual links with a caliper, and 10 links with a tape measure, and the numbers suggest 3/8 HT very slightly elongated (or maybe originally slightly over spec length).

Re: Looking for Info on Lofrans Tigres Gypsy #276H
I have a 3/8” gypsy that is collecting dust. It is marked 3/8 HT, 3/8 PC.
My windlass is the Lofrans Royal, and I have 5/16” chain, so I have no need for this one. Not sure if it’s compatible with the Tigres, but odds are it is.

Yes, that would fit my Tigres windlass PM on its way.

My quest for the correct gypsy (chainwheel) for my 3/8" HT G4 chain is now solved, thanks to member LarryDW who graciously provided me with a 276H gypsy. Comparing the two side-by-side it's easy to see the differences between the two wheels: the 276H is more massive, with thicker shoulders, deeper pockets, and more depth from outside diameter to the central drum.
Upon installing and testing the 276H chainwheel it became immediately obvious that this is in fact the more suitable wheel for my chain, with the chain-hop completely eliminated.
So, for those reading this thread who may be dealing with the same issue, my experience here suggests that the best gypsy for 3/8 HT chain is not the 276E, but rather 276H.
Thanks, Larry!
