Lofrans X2 / project 1000 disassembly & service

Hi!

Bought myself a Lofrans service kit with intent to do proper service of my X2 vertical windlass.

Good job, as during extraction of the shaft/motor/gearbox from below the top bearing disintegrated! Ordered the bearing too!

I’ve got the gearbox extracted from below, separated from both the motor and the deck components.... shaft is stuck in the gearbox - can’t decide yet if it was expected for the shaft to be stuck here.

Great diagrams from Lofrans, but some guidance/ordering of take apart would be highly useful. Can’t find much directly useful on forums/youtube.

Anyone got any tips/guidance?

I’ve got 2 bearing seals out. One on the back of the main shaft isn’t so useful because it’s got to go out the other end I think. One on the motor shaft exposes a circlip which looks useful to remove to get that shaft out. Not sure if that is a prerequisite to the maknshaft coming out.

Removing the 4 screws round the gearbox housing hasn’t let it just fall apart as I had hoped.

So thinking some moderate ‘encouragement’ is needed.

You need to dig out that round snap ring, then the shaft will come out. I go through top bearings like crazy. I have started buying bearings and seals at a local bearing house.

Thanks Ecos. That top bearing - the outer race remained in the deck plate.... can you recall if it comes up out the top or if it needs to go down through the bottom (probably necessitating the plate coming off the deck)?

Another topic if I may: any idea how much/what type of grease/oil needs to go in the gearbox?

Don’t worry about oil - did just find that in a Lofrans doc on website

Ordered myself an SKF stainless steel replacement for the top one - hoping it fares well!

I take the shaft and gearbox out/off the bottom then drive the top race out from below with a drift/screwdriver.

Re: Lofrans X2 / project 1000 disassembly & service

Got the gearbox apart! I suspect removal of the small motor shaft (part 1308) wasn’t critical, but gave me much more comfort to start knocking the casing (part 920) gently with a piece of wood until it came off.

I got all the bearings off to replace except the one at the end of the motor shaft tunnel (part 309) - will try to remove but in good shape if I can’t get it.

The big washer (part 923) has some corrosion on so I’m going to source one of those.

The main shaft (part 917) seems corroded to the sleeve (part 922)... but not going to try to separate, no value to come from it I think.

A job not to be done without some workshop tools!

Got the blind bearing out (part 309)! Used this trick... https://youtu.be/w62c4NQDwP0 had to use brown packing paper with grease, and used a rubber hammer on the actual motor shaft, but out she popped! Next to get it all back together.....

Reassembly is progressing. Compressing the spring and getting the top circlip was a challenge; solved with 2 g-clamps: Click image for larger version

This disassembly/service/reassembly is not for the faint-hearted - not an on board job: needs a workshop with tools!

All done. Last job was extraction of the old bearing outside race from the deck plate. For me that needed removal from the boat to the workshop, which also allowed a thorough clean....but all easy enough. Click image for larger version
