Lofrans project 1000w gypsy

Hi all. The clutch cones on the anchor winch of a new-to-me boat won’t release. Guessing it’s all corroded inside. Any advice for getting the cones and gypsy off the shaft so I can replace?

Cheers

Ross

Heat gun not flame ,heat until you cannot touch the clutch not the shaft, use lead or soft faced hammer gently ,a few taps should do it, don’t go over board with the grease.⛵️⚓️

Thanks loads… heat the clutch not the shaft until too hot to touch, then tap away. Will see how I get on. Then it’s open the wallet for a new set of cones

Any advice for cleaning up the cones and mating faces on the gypsy? Brass wire brush and elbow grease? Any solvents? Thanks in advance

Kerosene or similar with 500 wet and dry .a bit of care is required,do not put flats on the cones .⚓️⛵️

Cones need grease, yet they also need to not slip. The best way to do this is to put valve lapping compound on them, spin them back and forth and get the surfaces absolutely matched.

If you just wire brush them, you’ll have trouble getting enough matching surface area to generate the friction needed.

If you skip the grease, you’ll overload the system and shear the key.

ok. that makes sense. Will see if my local Supercheap Auto has valve grinding paste. Sort of a blast from the past - one of my jobs as a nipper was valve grinding cylinder heads in my dad's car repair business, with no OHS in sight!

guessing its a thin smear of grease rather than a big goop

...and maybe a little penetrating oil on the shaft to sit a few hours prior.

A thin film is all that is needed.

Of course you could put a big goop on, but the pressure of the cones would quickly squeeze out most of it. If you have a choice, this is actually a place where "high pressure" grease makes sense. That basically means that it is resistant to ALL getting squeezed out when it is put under pressure.

One of the most common damages you see to a windlass is to the shafts and keys. Unlubricated clutches can lock up. They key can't take all that force if the anchor is still stuck on the bottom and a wave lifts the bow. SOMETHING has to give... If not the clutch, it will be something that costs money to repair.

Re: Lofrans project 1000w gypsy

And to your original problem, I have a large bearing puller that slides behind the gypsy and inner cone. With that, I can pull against the shaft without risk of bending or distorting anything.

Hasn't beaten me... yet.
